Best Shorty Headers
Yes I know it's really not even worth it to get headers unless your getting LT's, but I live the wonderful state of CA and don't want to be dodging smog checks for the rest of my life. Anyways I basically know of that JBA and Edelbrock are the ones I've seen to be the most popular. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should be going with. Thanks yall!

I have JBA shorties and I will say they look greatin the engine bay. But I have no idea what power my car puts to the ground so... Id honestly say it may not be worth it.

i've heard that the stock manifolds on an 01-02 car perform just as well as shorties, so it might be cheaper to just find a set of those for cheap... like from someone that upgraded their car to LT's

i have seen dyno sheets with just jba's added and the adv gain seemed to be around 8hp. The ones i have seen were basically stock cars(bolt on stuff) i did hear about a cam/head car with them pick up 12hp but didnt see a dyno sheet...

I'm doin' JBA's right now with my head and cam swap. On a 98/99 they are probably good for around 10rwhp give or take, and maybe a little more with heads and cam. I think all the shorties will be real close to each other as far as gains are concerned, and the JBA's seem to be made the best IMHO. I'll never know what I gained though, because Im doing alot of mods at the same time.

Why not mid lengths? Are they illegal in CA also?
I guess I just don't understand it. If the car is still putting out as much or less harmful emissions, why would it matter if you had a monkey bolted to your engine?

My thoughts exactly....if you pass the sniffer, why does it matter what you've done to your car??? It matters because CARB makes alot of money on the expensive process it takes to get a part CARB approved. It's a conspiracy, and there aren't enough people that complain about this to change anything. Don't even get me started. As far as headers being legal.....no CARB #=not legal.

the main reason why they are not legal is cause of the location of the cats gets moved back(like someone else mentioned here). What this means by relocating the cats is that it takes longer for them to heat up and start working hence you polute the air more for x amount of time..... I have no idea how much more time it takes for them to heat up to operating temp when they are moved further back... Moving them back a little bit wont really have an effect on emmissions once the car/exhaust is up to temp.. This is the main reason we have air pumps on our cars, to reduce the time it takes for the cats to work properly..

I used the hooker shorties, they're not longtubes, but they look nice, bolt up easy, are emmisions legal in ca. and there are some gains over stock. I went back to longtubes after I passed smog... so I've got a pair of hooker shorties for sale! They're posted in parts for sale section.

I have a set of JBA's and currently make 380 hp and 374 tq at the wheels with a 224 cam, lightly ported head w/ stock values and stock y pipe. Mine are stainless and coated. If you can pick them up for cheap go ahead if you have to pay full pop save your cash.
