Default Do I have this right? Difference between posi and limited slip ....

limited slip diff... power is sent to the non-drive axle (wheel that's slipping) to prevent the wheels from slipping?

posi.... locks both axles?

What's the advantages and disadvantages of both?

now that question is a can of worms.

the way I see it, if you stomp on the gas and both tires light up, that's a posi. but it's technically called a limited slip rearend. but how many people call them "12 bolt limited slip" 12 bolt posi is what I've always called them.

I guess anything that lets the two sides work independantly when going around a sharp slow corner is called a limites slip. mine bites and hops a bit taking a sharp right hand corner. doesn't do it when I turn left.

I am guaranteed to hook up both tires when turning left and stomping the gas, all my gm cars with limited slip rearends have worked this way. It's a crapshoot when I turn right and do the same thing, most of the time it will only spin the right wheel. Why is this?

A tru posi i guess would be a spool type rearend where there is no clutch or spider gears or planetary gears or cones or whatever other device out there that allows the center section to compensate for two different rear wheel speeds at the center point.

This type of differential is a pain to drive on the street and 99.9% of the people out there will not be driving this on the street. Drag racing only. Cept for that crazy sumbitch SARDOG. I can see him running a spool or locker on the street.

I might be wrong on some of this so those of you that know more than I do please chime in.

LSD = limited slip differential
posi = GMs name for it
trac loc= Chryslers name for it
broke= fords name for it

LSD is basicaly the function, posi and trac loc is what the different manufactures call it

That's one thing fjord got right, the 9" is about as bullet proof as you can get. Plus having a spare pumpkin all set up to go and swap out in about an hours work is pretty sweet too.

Well, no matter what kind of rear you have, 12 bolt, 9", etc. the weak point will always be the LSD... a 12 bolt with a locker and no c-clips is basically as bulletproof as a 9" with the same stuff. Give them both a regular LSD, and either one can suffer blown spider gears.

true, but the 9" spider gears are larger and can absorb more punishment.

The combo of the 4 spider gears arranged like 4 sides of a box, with clutches applying pressure (actually springs pushing on them) is what gives you the limited slip, and the posi-traction too. They are located inside the carrier with 2 on the axle ends, and the other 2 orbiting around them with the ring gear (carrier). Under load the spiders & axles rotate at the same speed, but 1 or the other can break loose. A locker replaces all the with solid pieces.

And the spider gears break all the time because they are the diameter of a pop can & about 1" thick. The Ring & Pinion gears are MUCH beefier. They didn't call me Spider Savage when I was younger for nothin.....
