Default SH*T! Did I bend a rod?

So I was on my way to work today messin with a Prelude and to make a long story short, I came over a lil too much (tried to grab 3rd and got 1st :bashhead:  :bashhead: :sosad: :help: ) I immediately put my clutch in (which is slipping pretty good in 1st by the way) when I saw the tach go above 4.5k RPMs but not before it hit around 6,250!!! Is there any way I can tell if I did some damage? After I got off the freeway it drove fine... nothing wrong (except my slipping clutch) that I could feel or tell... no smells no smoke no nothing...

:help: plz! Thanks.

'bent rod' usually means connecting rod....but i assume you are referring to pushrods.

just pull the valvecovers and check them out, nothing to it

if anything you might have bent some pushrods, easy to check

remove coil packs (5 10mm bolts per side, maybe 6)
remove valve covers (4 8mm bolts per side)
remove rocker arms (8 8mm bolts per side)
pull all pushrods and roll them on a piece of glass, if the wobble, get new ones

you mean pushrod? the only way to KNOW is to take each one out and roll in on a piece of glass...........

if you bent a rod, you WOULD know.........same thing with a spun bearing.....

when I noticed the title from the main page and then read your post, my first thought was "DUDE........THAT HONDA OWNED YOU (if he made you bend a connecting rod)"

well, if it seems to be running fine and smells fine the only way to check it is to pull the heads measure the length that the pistons stick out. I cant remember the actual number, but you should be able to find that pretty easily.

Highly doubt its a rod, you'd know it by clanking, beating, annoying sounds.

just check the pushrods.......

Yes I am referring to pushrods... should I expect a VERY minor bend or something visible to the naked eye? What are the specs for ft. lbs. of torque on the bolts i'm going to be loosening? I don't wanna screw anything up in the process.

EDIT: Oopse... ok roll em on a piece of glass. Thanks. So do I only need to remove the valve covers or the heads too for the pushrods??? Am I hurting my engine by driving around with them? Or just loosing a lil performance?

depends....I have seem some that you almost couldn't tell rolling them on glass, and others that looked like Zeus' lighting bolt...

just valve covers and rocker arms..........22ft/lbs on the rocker bolts......

shouldn't hurt anything.....if they were bent bad enough to hurt something you would probably hear noise......

if they are bent bad, you would know because it would be making some noise. just take the valve covers and rockers off and roll the pushrods if you think you messed something up. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it, unless it's costing you some power. It's never a bad idea to check though. Better safe than sorry.

good time to upgrade pushrods if you have the money and desire to do so.

When I missed the 3 to 4 shift and bent my push rods, the check engine light came on and the car had a rough idle. Check the 5 and 7 cyclinders real good, most people bend the push rods here the most. If the 5 and 7 push rods are good than most likely you did not do any damage to the other ones. But to be on the safe side check them all, it is not hard to do.

All the major sponsor on here have them.

I got mine from Thunder Racing together with my cam and new valve springs.

This is just me...but....just reving it to 6250 isn't that big of a deal...they rev it higher on the dyno. But better safe than sorry I guess.

I'd get the hardened pushrods from TSP. That's what I have on my car.

Uhh... I didn't think the rev limiter would protect you in a down shift miss, just a throttle responce rpm jump? Like staying in gear until you are bouncing it...

well with the Hypertech i did set the limiter at 5900 but i saw it go quite a bit higher than that. the tires screatched a lil when i let the clutch out in 1st (though it was 3rd...) then i saw the tach go up WAY too high so i pushed in the clutch... and you know the rest. The car did lurch foward when i did it... just in a bad way.

Throw a cam in there too, lol. You should be able to find pushrods for about 100 bux brand new.

Not protecting, but I thought that rev limiter is at 6200, I was just wondering how he got to 6250.
What I'm trying to say, maybe in panic, it didn't really go that high.

FWIW:ive missed a shift while loggint the car and saw just over 7500. Its no way to tell how far the motor went by the tach.
