Lifter retainers
Is it possible to make your own tool to hold the lifters in place while the cam is removed? I think I have read where people use 5/16 dowels, but I can't find a good description of what they did/

ah, any body have a pic of a lifter. i was always under the impression that the lifter would be on top. so there is like a slot on teh lifter that the dowel fits into. is it possible to miss and have the lifter fall once the cam is out.

And yeah, you can have a lifter fall and you are looking at a weekend project just to recover the damn thing out of the bottom end of the motor. But they wont fall once you get the dowel all the way through. Just have your new cam sitting right there and most of the time the majority if not all of the lifters will stick on their own when you spin the cam over. But you have to do it fairly fast because it will throw them up further where you can slide the dowel in and it will make it to the back of the block first try.
