Default 3.73's vs RPM's

With some 3.73's and say a 3600 stall....what kinda RPM's do you usually sit at while cruiseing at 80? im looking at an A4 Formula and i will be using the car ALOT on the highway. TIA.

When the torque converter locks up at cruise, the stall will have no affect on cruising rpms, having said that the cruise rpms at 80 MPH with 3.73s will be slightly above 2700 RPMs.

thats pretty low.....if its that low on the highway how come A4's dont get almost the same MPG as a M6? I was told M6's get 25-28mph where as A4's get like 19mpg (maybe someone gave me some wrong info? )

I have 3.73 for 1100 miles and I love them. At 78 mph, I am 2753 rpm and that is not bad at all. As for mileage, I am getting 17 mpg with both city and highway driving. There are lots of stoplights on my street.

The gas mileage is due to 2 factors:

1) an M6 uses less power than an A4, even when the converter is locked.

2) an M6 6th gear is much taller than the A4's O.D. I have 3.73s in my M6 and at 80 mph I'm just below 2000 rpm. I saw the difference in highway mileage as soon as my T56 went in.

I may switch to 4.10s and even then I'll only be turning 2200 rpm at 80 mph

28 mpg seems high for an A4, but all of PonyEater's mods help mpg. With 2.73s he's only turning about 2k at 80 mph as well.

Actually I think it's dead on. I had pretty much the same mods and gears a few years ago, and drove from Michigan to Tennessee and back. 6 tanks of gas each saying 28mpg. It's very do-able.

i have a 400 trans 3500 stall and 4.10's... i'm glad my odometer doesn't work anymore. that way i can't check gas mileage even if i wanted to. w/ 28" tires i cruise at 68 mph at 3,500 rpm.
