Default which heads should i use on my 427 ls1 motor

hey guys i am going to biuld a 427 ls1 this winter for my 02 ws6 and was wondering which heads i should use? how are the patriot heads? i was looking at there pricing and there prices are very reasonable for complete heads with nice rockers and everything, but im not too familiar with which company makes the best heads and that stage i should go with and all that. when i look at the stage i get confused sometimes as to which to go with. i would really appreciate any help. thanks again

If you have the money AFR 225's are your best bet with a 427 ls1. They are top notch. Not saying patriot heads are not nice, they are top quality as well. I hang out with a bunch of ls1 guys and both my buddy with a 402 and my buddy with a 408 both went with the AFR's after a long debate over whether to go with patriot, prc, or afr heads. The biggest numbers have come with the afrs so i would check them out first. All in how much you want to spend though but i figure with a 427 ls1 you will want the best. Good luck with whatever you choose though!

are you keeping the same bore? or did you bore to a 427? if bored to a 427 (sleeved) you could consider teh LS7 heads and intake... each head will be about 550-600 depending on retailer. the LS7 intake should run about 250ish just food for thought.

I know a guy that just put some AFR 225s on a 408. The heads are great and the quality is amazing! I don't know much about the patriots or any of the others you have listed.

That's an easy one to answer. The new high port LS7 heads with matching intake are available now at www.gmpartsdirect.com

Head part #12578450 $515.35
Intake part #12569011 $251.48

The new rockers and valves will soon be available also. Look in the LS2/LS7 section for part numbers.

you need a large bore to use the LS7 heads, but they look to be marvels. big valves and huge flow numbers.

I will be using Patriot LS6 Stage III heads for my 427 build. I am planning on hand finishing and polishing them though to help clean them up. If more information comes out on the LS7 heads and compatibility I will look into them.

The LS7 heads are less money than the LS2/243's??!!hahahahaha

someone explain it to me....I take it they are bare castings and you need all the associated valvetrain pieces including the LS7 specific rockers.

Also quick question, how did you get the flow information on the ported FAST and the LS7 intakes? I seriously doubt that the LS7 is even close to the FAST.

My vote would be for the LQ9 TEA stage 3's vs. the AFR's anyday. About the same $$$ but vastly different flow numbers across the board.

hey guys, thanks for all the different head choices. i will look into them all before i decide which ones to go with, one other question, what did u mean by i would need a big bore inorder to use the ls7 heads? i will probably be using the lunati 427 rotating assembly. would that give me abig enough bore for the ls7 heads? thanks guys

If you're talking ADVERTISED flow numbers, yes the TEA's show more flow. But if you're talking actual DYNO numbers, the LQ9 TEA Stage 3s have not shown power equal to their published flow numbers. The AFR 225s have consistently put down big dyno numbers...that's what should really count.
