Default Oil preasure drop

98 TA I have the SLP oil pump, I run 40-50 as an average, but I just noticed that when the revs get up to the 5000 rpm+ range the oil preasure drops down to 25-30. I never noticed it before, but I am usually watching the tach, or the road when I am getting on it. Anyone else notice this?

Oh boy. Any strange noise from the engine? Knocking sounds? My oil pressure started doing that along with a slight knocking sound and it turned out I spun the #6 rod bearing.

Are you low on oil? It could be that too much oil is up top at high RPM's and the pump is sucking air too.

Did you guys hear ticking sound coming from the valve train? I bent a pushrod before and one of my rocker arms was oil straved. Now my motor is makeing the same sound and I think my oil pump took a dump on me after a couple hard runs. Oil purssure is lower than normal.

Oil is full and clean, no knocking noises, my valvetrain has been ticky since the H/C swap, but everyone I have spoken to said that it is normal. Car runs great, and I don't make a habit of it, but I have shifted at 6500 with no trouble just the oil preasure drops about 10 lbs. I thought about all the oil getting trapped out of the pan, but I don't really hold it at hi RPM very long, is there time to suck that much oil out of the pan?

Well after doing some more "testing" it seems to be oil getting away from the pickup somehow. If I bring the revs up slow there is no problem, when I get on it hard the car squats and then the preasure drops I added a 1/2 quart more oil and the issue got somewhat better. When I did the oil pump I did not remove the oil pan, can the pickup tube twist, or fall out of something I did not see?

Thats funny! I am having the exact same problem and have an SLP pump. When I go wot the pressure has dropped as low as 18psi. Around town during normal driving pressure is between 30-45psi. I have changed oil filters and switched to 50 weight oil and it is better but still drops.
Anybody else having this problem with an SLP pump?

You need to take that up with slp then because that's gonna spin a bearing soon. You need at least 10psi for every 1000rpms (general rule of thumb)

Yeaps that is right, (you should for every 1000 rpms have 10psi) so you must be having a mechanical problem somewhere ie... bearings, pump or low level of oil. Also the pump pick-up screen could be blocked from dirt and other debris.

Yeah When I Did My Heads And Cam I Also Installed A Slp Oil Pump. When The Car Starts In The Morning I Had 50 Psi. Well On The Way To Work One Day I Got Into Alot Of Traffic. I Didnt Realize My Engine Had Drop Below 20 Psi So I Spunned A Bearing. People Told Me That I Must Of Had Pinch The O-ring. Well I Rebuild The Motor And Replace The O Ring. I Still Notice The Same Thing Its Happening. I Dont Know If Its A Deffective Pump Or What? So Im Just Thinking About Buying A Different Brand. Cause Im Not Blowing The Motor Again For Something So Stuppid.

Yes I think I am going the same route. Z06Kern could you keep me posted?and I will do the same. Hey 777 I got my camshaft from Trevor. I will probaly call in the AM. Sorry I did not get my pump there probably change the sender too.

I never noticed this before, the car sees the track maybe twice a year and has 67,000 mobil one miles on it. The o-ring seemed to go in ok, I never dropped the pan so yes the pickup could be blocked, I am not sure by what, but who ever is?

my motor has been rebuilt over a year n half. and i put slp oil pump on it, and i have oil pressure at idle 17-20 at idle, 30-35 crusing and 45-50 wot when fully warmed, and havne't had a problem yet, it has a lot of drag strip runs too. so i have a hard time to believe that anything below 40 is bad, when you put a ported pump on your gonna lose pressure because you have more volume. i have a 2000 s10 also (stock) and when it gets fully warmed it drops down to 20-25 at idle

At this point, I would be happy with 45-50psi at WOT. My pressure drops down to between 18-25 at high RPM's. I will change the pump and o-ring and report back.

My pump is ported. Running mobil1 5w30 and I get 45-50 warm idle. 60-65 driving below 2500rpms and I've never really got a good look at wot but at 4,000rpms it's near the end at 80psi. I'm pretty shocked that you don't have issues with your engine. That is pretty low oil pressure.

777 what pump? I still have 45-50 at idle 50-60 till about 5000 then nosedives. Only when on it hard, it is like a pickup problem like the oil rushing away from it. I will probably drop pan, but want a pump to replace mine if nothing found. Funny thing is I was talked into this pump because 98's had problems....LOL what do I have now?

I'm running a 03 Vette pump which is the factory replacement, after changing the oil I run when warmed up 40psi. Before it was around 38psi, never really watched under hard acceleration, but will know and will let you know the results.
