Default Hey Help me out some, 12secs

Hey sup all of ya tran am owner. I am also soon to be one. I want this to be a daily diver and i hear good things about it, i have heard it a very good daily diver accounting that its a v8. Now what i want is to run very low 12's and maybe high 11's while staying N/A. I am sure many people here can do that.

Now is it a smart idea to mod your car and than still drive it daily? also what is the best hp giving mods that won't break my bank and still staying n/a. After i buy another car i'll porbly put a TT in the firebird but for the next 2/3 years its gonna be N/A. Oh Also is there anything i should about the car, common problems,.

Okay heres what i am thinking so far, ported intake, catback with flowmaster(or sumthing better) maybe X pipe. What else would i need to hit the low 12s.

Also i hear these cars run 3.4-3.7 stock is that ture?

I was thinking about Bigger gears, the 3.70's or sumthing. Thx

Oh why only going for 12's-11's b/c 1. its a DD and 2. its enough to snap the necks of these barly moded mustang gts and civic and stuff. I'll aim higher later.

Also i hear these cars run 13.4s-13.7s stock is that ture?

Last thing this car will only be driven 10-30 a day maybe less, and it will more than liky be a ws6.

Well most of what you have heard is true, as for staying naturally aspirated , its no problem , you can probably run well into the 10s maybe even single digits with no forced induction. Stock gearing is going to be 2.73, 3.42 or 3.72 I believe

A quick rundown on common problems include, bad window motors, piston slap , oil burning, and a uselessly weak 10 bolt rear end. i think are the big ones. These cars are surprisingly good daily drivers. My Formula gets better gas mileage than my V6 oldsmobile does!

As for modding your daily driver, the more power the more likely you are to break something, as long as you do it all in moderation you can still drive it daily and run 12s no problem

First off, as was already mentioned, check the Noob forum.

If you get anything with over about 50k miles expect a bad/getting bad window motor, it's just a given. Piston slap is normal. Change your oil regularly and IMO it's a good idea to give a few minutes to warm because of this known issue. Don't fire it up cold in the morning and go beat on it. A LS6 oil pump is a nice upgrade. Pretty much everyone is aware of the weak *** 10bolt rears in these cars. You might get lucky and run 10's for a little while with it, or you might break it in stock form. If you plan on running it hard regularly a 12bolt is a no brainer. If you don't have the cash for one, sticking to a radial is a smart idea.

As for modding, my car almost runs 12's stock. It doesn't take a lot to get into the 12's with these cars. If you want low 12's/high 11's, a cam and full bolt-ons will get you there and you'll still be fine to DD.

Read up some, there's a lot of great info on this site.

Default Setup

I have a 2001 camaro hard top, it ran a 13.2 @ 106, with just a LM exhaust and lid on street tires. It has a factory 273 gear in it know, and with the way its running theres no since in putting a 342-373 gear in it. And with a dyno tune I'll easily be in the twelves. My advice is to see what it runs first, and do the simplest things that will make it quicker. I raced a 97 T/A with no mods, and just a 410 gear. I had him off the line because he spun, and at top end, because he shut down. So just find the set up thats right for your car.

if you go with an auto, change the stall out to 3500, for a dd. that will put you into the 12's. then do all the free mods, dr, headers and a catback, you will be in the mid to low 12's right there.
