I BELIEVE if you are looking at the sprocket on the crank, you rotate it counter clock-wise to retard it. Think about it, if you turn it counter clock-wise, the crank is going to be rotated one notch further clockwise (ahead, in this case) when the dot is straight up. Someone else should chime in on this though to give a second opinion, because a lot of times i'm a dumbass and get things backwards like i'm retarded or something. Plus I don't have one around to check.
