Default Timing chain..

I just got finished checking the pushrods and rockers, I even got a set of manley pushrods and put those in, and retorqued the rockers and put it all back together, and the noise is still there. I took it down to my work and had the owner of the shop i work at listen to it and he said its coming from the front of the motor, and hes sure that its coming from the timing chain, now my question is are there guides and such that can come loose and could the timing chain loosen and be slapping against the cover, he said that the noise is equal to the belt movement, the belt speeds up the noise speeds up, rev it and let it go and it slaps fast and slows back down. Any suggestions? Told me its definatly not a bearing or valvetrain noise, so thats a relief. Whats involved in removing the timing cover?

It sounds like you're in good shape then.

Just grab yourself a new chain setup, and throw that sucker on. There isn't much in that spot, so he's probably right I'd imagin.

if you're going to get a pully, may as well do it now.

GL.

I haven't heard of that, but it's not to say it can't be true. Although, I'd imagine if noise is coming from the timing chain area then the problem could also be in one of the timing gears. You can pick up an LS2 timing chain from GMPartsDirect for pretty cheap if you just want to buy a chain. If you want to buy a complete timing set or want to go with an underdrive pulley you can pick those up from one of the sponsors as well.

remove the following:
lid and maf assembly, radiator, fans, crank pulley, timing cover, cam gear, oil pump, drop oil pan about 1/2" remove oil pickup bolt, remove oil pump, change chain ,reassemble in reverse and becareful with the oring for the oil pump. What symptoms did you have with the car?? miss' or just noise?

p.s. ls2 chain is about $30 bucks from most places...SDPC Great service and quick shipping!!

I'm guessing I should probably throw a cam in there while all thats apart, can someone recommend me a cam as well, I don't really know alot about cams for these cars, I wouldn't want anything aggresive, more of a mild cam.

please do yourself and us a favor and search. read the sticky at the top of the page. if you dont want to do that, then get the ls6 cam or the 224 and be done with it. This is a subject you have to research on your own. I think my old 228 was very very streetable..you may not or you may thing the trex is perfect.

Yep, it's the chain that started on the GTO's. It's much beefier. Search the forum for some pics... you can easily tell.

Nevermind, I just did a quick search. Here is the thread: https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/391404-about-ls2-timing-chain.html

I'd just go ahead and order a timing set or chain (whichever your preference is). You're gonna need one if you do a cam anyways, as well as the new oil pump. And if you don't upgrade your cam yet, they're just added security.

um Im not sure if I wanna do a cam now, I mean I would love to build this motor, but with college and work, no time, I realize that swapping in a cam would be real easy while doing the timing chain but I'm hesitant because shouldnt you change the lifters as well, and I dont wanna start pulling heads off.
