Default ? about LS2 timing chain

is the LS2 timing chain any different from the LS1? im almost 100% sure it is, but the reason im asking is because when i went to the parts departmetn to order one, they said that the chains are the same..... does anyone have an exact part # for the correct one?

The original LS1 part number was replaced with the LS2 part number as I understand it. If he looks it up, he probably only finds the new one. However, if you give him the original number he will probably see that it was superceded.

Absolutely NOT the same physically, probably the same part number (now) in GM's inventory.. Bottom line is, the LS2 chain has thicker end-plates, it's a beefier chain compared to what you have in the car now.. Do it. Order it w/ the LS2 part number if you have to.

The ls2 chain is the current replacement part number for ls1, ls6 and ls2 engines. When you look up "timing chain" for a 2002 trans am, it will give you the ls2 part number. Like the picture shows, its thicker than the chain youll be taking out of the motor.

not the same physical chain at all. much beefier and stronger. wouldn't put another ls1 chain in my motor if i had the choice of putting the ls2 chain in instead.

Just replace the oil pump with a new stock pump and ls2 chain. Either port it yourself or dont even bother porting. Shimming is optional as well. Its a hundred bucks for the added piece of mind of a new chain and oil pump.

Just leave the old gears on there. The chain will come alone. Nice upgrade for 30 dollars. Best 30 bucks for piece of mind.

so there nothing wrong with using the old chain gears? i mean if the ls2 chain is bigger and beefier wouldnt u need the gear to fit it?

Nope, its the outer links of the chain that are thicker. They fit the stock sprockets just fine. Infact, I believe that the crank sprocket is identicle ls1 vs. ls2. The ls2 has a revised cam sprocket only because thats where the cam sensor is. Keep your sprockets. Ive yet to hear about them ever being worn past the point of re-use.
