Default Ok new delema.....my 4th 4L60E took a Dump.

Ok It all started with the 1st 4L60E that went out on me @ 3,500 miles. I bring it to the dealers and they fix it under warrenty.

2nd 4L60E went out @ 6,200 miles. I bring it to the dealers and they fix it under warrety while giving me problems about my bald tires and SLP LoudMouth.

3rd 4L60E went out @ 15,000 miles. I bring to the dealer and they said Go and **** your self....how nice of them.....I file a BBB complains stating its a lemmon and all I want is to get my Trans fixed right. The dealership eventually found out that I am a regular at E-town and I go there at least once a week. My excuse was that I see that car magazines advetice that my car does 13.5 at the 1/4 mile so that why I go the track....long story shot they voided my Drivetrain, and all other warrenties they left alone.

So I go to a TCI web site and get the list of all the Parts that they use for their Stage 4 4L60E's. I bring it to my Bosses bother who owns a Transmition shop and he builds me that 4L60E for $2,000 Not bad of a price.

Since then I added a Stall, Gears, H/C and N2O. Dynoed at 393HP and 363TQ with H/C and 467HP and 626TQ on N2O. I been Running 12.1 @113MPH N/A and 11.1 @ 120MPH on Juice. With 1.47 60 FT.

That 4L60E that lasted me 30,000 miles of hard abuse finally gave up.

I wanted to do a T56 Swap, but I know not all clutches can hold that my power and I will defenetly will never see my respectible 11.1 1/4 time and defenetly wont see my 1.47 60FT.

I am aiming towards TH350 or TH400, but I don't know much about them. What are the Pros and Cons about them and how much is there a difference from and heavy duty 4L60E.

I want the same guy to built my 4L60E to do the swap, but he said if there is too much fabrication and wirering he will refuse.

Please help.

Thank you for taking your time to read.

Yea man, if I do a tranny swap it will be for a TH400. If built correctly they should hold anything you can throw at them. They're not too bad to swap into a 4th gen. The TH350 is almost the same thing just not quite as strong, would probably hold anything your gonna throw at it but I'd just be safe with the TH400 and then you don't limit yourself in the future. The TH400 is a great tranny and you can just ratchet shift it and be done with it.

Good to know, but what are some things I need that will make the TH400 work? How is my car going to be on the highway or even on the Track? I trap at @120 MPH and it would suck if I start running out of gear.

The th400 will suck up more power and has a 2.48 first gear compared to the 3.08 4L60e gear. Freeway driving will suck unless you have a 3.73 or smaller gear. Top speed depends on rear tire diameter, shift rpm and gearing. My friend maxed out at 131 mph with a 28" slick and 4.10 gears. The install requires some minor wiring, new cross member, new shifter, new converter, new driveline and some modifications to the cooler lines if you want to reuse them. It will bolt up to the block with 5 bolts. I would stick with the 60e if the car is a daily driver. I went to a 4L80e, but it was a lot of cash and work to swap.

My TA is not my Daily Driver, but once in a while I would take it on long drives. This year I took it to Florida and Back and in July I took it to Ohio and Back.

Is there a web side that does step by step install guide?

There may be, but we just put my buddies in without instructions except for the wiring. It is not that hard to swap in.

My vote is TH350, with a Rossler 9" tailshaft, you keep the stock speedo operational and you can keep the stock driveshaft. Torque converters are cheaper for A3's so that helps. X Member, or modify one (I just got the BMR piece, very nice, but I have a stock modded one also). Flexplate, the ATI and TCI are identical (or seemingly) and are multiuse (A3 or A4) and do not require any spacers, but warning, sand off the powdercoating around the bolt holes. Dipstick, I am using the 36" Lokar and its nice. Shifter, I use the B&M Pro Ratchet, it has provisions to hook up the Nuetral Safety wiring, and can be used in the A3 or A4 role, Forward or Reverse MVB.
