I just got through building a new motor and dropped in into my car. I read somewhere that you need to use something like a 30w non detergent oil to break it in. Well I have about 70 miles on the car and now I am getting a rough knocking sound makes me think its a spun rod bearing, I dont know or could it be the oil the 30W non detergent stuff just not good for our cars? I havent pulled the oil out to look at it since I just got it running today. Any thoughts on this?

I put regular dino oil in my new motor. I'm still running it 2000 miles later and it's fine. The oil is fine for our cars. The rod knock is not because you used dino oil. My $.02.

Thanks for the reply. When you say dino oil is that the non detergent stuff that I have in my car? I have never heard it called dino oil. This stuff was cheap like 1.50 a Qt. The funy thing is it only makes the noise at about 800 rpms if I take it to a 1000 it goes away and while I am driving there is no noise except every so often while at a stop. I was told if it was a rod bearing then it would get louder under a load. The other thing I was just thinking of, I bought a TCI flexplate and remember reading that people were having problems with the bolts rubbing the rear cover, I dont know if that is it. To me it sounds like its coming from inside the motor, again thats just me.

So any conventional 5w30 oil is good for break in, or do you guys reccomend a certain brand, or is there an oil specific for breaking in a motor? Thanks!

M1 synthetic 5w30 all the way. As long as everything has lube with good pressure, your good to go.

straight 30 non detergent is much too thick for the LS1. I don't know where that info came from but you sould have asked before putting it in, not now. I don't think however that it's the cause of bearing problem at 70 miles unless you're in a real cold climate.

As far as your noise goes, alittle more info would be good. Like parts used and parts reused.

the only parts reused is the stock crank, main caps, and block. I got mahle forged pistons and forged connecting rods new lifters comp cam stock replacements, new bearings all around, and new hardend push rods, ported oil pump, LPE GT7 cam, and rollmaster timing chain
