Normal for 12-bolt to whine after a few launches?
When I first installed my Moser 12-bolt, it was dead quiet. After a few launches on the street, it whined slightly on decel. Last night at the track, I launched on spray 4 times, and cut 2 low 1.6 60's. Now it whines all the time. It's not incredibly loud, just something I noticed.
I just wanted to make sure this is normal.
I don't care how much it whines....as long as the damn thing doesn't break. Then I'll have to start shooting people.

Are the Moser 12 bolts supposed to whine after a few launches? No.

I've been leaving off of a trans brake for the last 3 years, cutting some low 1.3's 60' times and my 9" is dead quiet. Good thing I went with a 9" cause I think I would have a pile of broken 12 bolt parts to use as paper weights.

I'm talking about the manufactures heat treat process. The castings need to be a certain hardness so they can still cut then without tool life issues and still be hard enough to handle torque loads. I would say they are too soft cause I see a lot of posts about having gear noise after a few hard launches. This meaning that the casting may be distorting under load and it is unable to keep the pinion to differential bores in tolleremnces.

If I spent $2K on a axle that whines I would be really pissed! The 8.8's, 9"s, Dana 60's we've built for offroad rigs do not whine. Many get beat on alot harder than the average 12 bolt ever does. IMO it's simply a shoddy product.

Its normal.I bought mine used and it was DEAD QUIET untill I did some hard launches with DR's.It screamed like a banshee on decel until you stopped.I couldn't live with the noise so I installed a richmond gearset and solid pinion sleeve. Its been great with slight whine at a 55 mph target area but you need the windows up w/no radio. Then again,I haven't had it to the track since the gear. Also the "screaming" ring and pinion looked perfect.
