unlocked vs locked

the only thing is that... in one of the cam forums... two cars with identical mods showed what they dynoed at.. one dynoed LOCKED at about 400 horses.. the other dynoed unlocked at 365.. i know thats a really big difference and it is two different cars.. but i thought it would be more than 10 horses...

I went from 335 rwhp to 350 rwhp by locking up with a Viglante 6 pump converter.
However, this varies wildly depending on converter and power level. I've heard of turbo cars gaining 280 rwhp when locking the converter.

jimbob, my 2800 Vigilante / turbo setup doesn't make power on the dyno until 5400 and it seems to flash to 5400 on the street. I was looking at old dyno charts from the supercharged motor and it used to make peak torque at 3400 on the dyno versus 5500 now.
Where does your torque peak on the dyno?

Could be a few issues....
1. Win Pep 7 really kills the stalled verters numbers...If your last dyno was using that, look at horse power vs. mile per hour to get a more accurate number as an idea.
2. Your stall could have taken a dump. But a good turbo making in the 450ish range and up will make that verter really stall. To the point were it's useless for average horse power. Friend of mine had to take out his ST3500 and go with a SC3000, to get the converter to have a good extension that was not way out of his power range (he was seeing 6000RPM extension with it). He's now using a 3400PYE and says it feels real good (the sc3000 was a little too tight for quick boost)...The old ST3500 verter he took out went into a real stock LS1 but stalls way to much now, so yes you can take a verter out over time with big torque numbers. If it gets loose enough it will really stall if your in the boost range.
My cars torque peak is 4900 locked and doesn't really give you a good number unlocked (Win Pep 7). Flashes to 4300ish rpm on dyno and looks like that should be the most torque area judging by hp graph vs. mile per hour...
What's your extension rpm now? say from 2nd to 3rd? If the difference from your shift rpm to extension rpm is real narrow. Then a tigher verter would help. My rpms drop from 6900 to 5200, so that's 1700 rpm drop. Which is actually to wide for the most average hp on a NA engine. I'm restalling my extension drop down to between 1k rpms and 1400rpm...

Assumptions.
For a t-76 and I'm assuming a .96 A/R (anything below 1). You should have instant boost above 4 k rpm. Max torque in the midrange as a result. So, I would look for something with a extension in the mid to high 4k range. PYE 3400 should do nicely. I'm not hocking any paticular verter as I have owned many, but this one I know will work good for you and handle the power...

Since I already have a Vigilante, I'll probably have them replace my '0' pump with a '3' pump for $225. That's about 800 rpm tighter and the tightest they offer. I don't doubt there are better converters available, but if it gains 100 rwhp with the converter pump change, then I know I'm on to something.
