questions about the ls1
Those that own the ls1, just curious to how the engine has held up, I will be buying a transam/camaro soon with an ls1 in it, and just need to know what to expect. I've heard many good things about them, but I'm just wondering if there are any common problems with the engine itself.

If you can afford it and it is available, get the 2001 or 2002 LS1; you will get the LS6 intake which is reputedly good for 12hp and less likely the LS6 block. If you buy the M6 you will also get the LS6 (Corvette) clutch. Some problems like oil consumption and pump failure were fixed and the EGR was removed. Look/listen for piston slap. Some engines had it badly but keep in mind the LS1 is a valvetrain noisy engine.

Search and read the stickies. There is a lot of information to be found and people often ask what to look for when buying a used LS1.
If you find a good deal on an older (98-99) LS1 don't be afraid of it so long as the mileage isn't through the roof. Decide whether you want an auto or a manual. You can search and read about the differences endlessly, it comes down to personal choice and what you want most out of the car.

the only thing that has check out here with some good friends of mine including me is in the past 6 months cars with around 90,000 miles give or take some the rod bearings have went out and caused the motor to lock up or make a lound slapping noise. But these are cars that have had abuse of course but I have a 98 and that is the only problem I would just make sure no one has had nos and spray the hell out of it look around the raditor shround or the intake box for holes drilled for a dry kit. Good luck the 98s did have bigger fuel injectors 28 lb vs the newer ones.

I was assuming the 01 and new LS1 engines had the LS6 PCV system.

If this isn't the case, then as you and another have indicated, the problem still exists throughout the latest model Camaro years.
thanks.
