My friend has a 98 LS1 with 161k on it. It's mostly stock (catback and lid) and still turns in 8.6s in the 1/8th. He's used Royal Purple 5w-30 every 3k miles. These engines can be beat on fairly hard as long as you maintain them.

Your car is ok to use synthetic oil. Stories you hear about problems changing over to synthetic are from the early days of its use. Now, the default setting is "no problems."
As to what weight/brand/color, or even whether to run synthetic, that's up to you. I use Mobil1 5w-40. 5w-30 and 10w-30 are what is recommended by GM. If you search the site for oil related entries you'll be overwhelmed by the number of hits and it will take you days to do a thorough reading of them all. There'll be a lot of pissing matches about what's best, but if you stick to 5w/10w-30/40 you can't go far wrong.
I'm not sure there really is a "best" oil as there are so many that will work just fine. If you are **** to the Nth degree, though, there's a Castrol jug and secret codes, handshakes, and Indiana Jones-like quests in your future. But, use a good filter and change oil at a reasonable mileage and you will be good to go. I think I can speak for just about everyone, though, when I suggest you not use any oil additives. Plain old oil is good.
Spend some search time getting educated about oils and choose what's best for your application.
