Am I Expecting Too Much From An LS1?
Okay, This may not be posted in the correct place. But I just have a question. Currently I am driving a 2000 Camaro V6. But my engine is on its last leg. I am upgrading to a 2001 LS1 with 70,000 miles. I have been talking to people about what to expect from this LS1 and my concern is I do alot of traveling. My Camaro V6 and I have been through alot together from Trips to Toronto to Trips to Ocean City. Am I crazy to expect an LS1 to be capable of being a Road Trip car? I asked one of my friends who owns an 1986 Camaro Z28, and he said that an LS1 would be just fine. I asked a guy I work with and he said that an LS1 is a Sport Engine and that driving long distances is going to be very hard and it wont last long. He said that if I am going to want a sports car for road trips then I need a V8 Mustang. I have no idea. I know my V6 has been a champ so far, but a LS1 is a bigger engine. I trust my friend with the Camaro over anybody, but I figured I would post this just to see what other people say. Am I crazy to think I can drive a LS1 on road trips?

eh?
All modern engines are fine and will last, so long as you look after them and serives as per requirements.
And a sports car engine, well umm ok. But the LS engine and variants are used in pick up trucks as well and many other cars.
No it won't be an issue and yes this is the wrong forum
But welcome to the LS1 club

the guy who owned my car before me averaged 18,000 miles a year. he had to have put some decent sized trips on there to reach that much. the motor is still strong and i would trust it on a trip of 500+ miles

The ls1 will be fine for long trips as I commuted 120 miles a day for a year in my 98 z28. As long as the engine your buying is in good working condition and you change the oil and maintain the engine properly then you will have no problem seeing 150,000+ miles. One of my buddies has a heads/cam/intake 99 ls1 with 130,000 miles and its still running as strong as ever. However, i dotn see your buddies reasoning that a v8 mustang would be a better road trip car than an ls1? That just doesnt make any sense...

Ya what the hell is that "If you want a sports car for road trips get a v8 mustnag"??? I have a 98 TA and my cousin has a 98 mustang. He has had more problems with that car than any car I have ever seen, plus it looks like ****! If you want a COOL, FAST road trip car get anything with a LS1/LS2. I hate Mustangs, Hell I hate Fords. Get that LS1. You wont regret it. And while its out of the car throw a cam in it!!

Note: The 5.3L is an lS1 variant. I have one in my 6,000lb Sunburban with which I tow on occaision a 6,000lb RV. The vehicle runs great and impresses me how a relatively small motor can haul 12,000lb without breathing hard. This Surburban is 3 years old now and has racked up about 50,000miles.
My previous SS had 34,000 miles on the odometer when it was stolen. The car had taken me to Vegas 3 times, LA twice and the bay area a couple times. (From the Reno/Lake Tahoe area. I could cruise at 90mph and get over 28mpg.
My new SS has only made one road trip and it behaved equally well. It's a low mileage car though and just broke 2,000 miles on the odometer.
The LS1 powered SSs mated to the 6spd always amaze me on the open road...the only problem on the horizan is posted speed limits as such a car can cruise comfortabely at 1.5x-2x what that number is in the white rectangle. Life is different when you can cruise at 1,500rpm traveling 70mph and when you lean on it the seepdometer just starts to rotate around looking for deep triple digits

If you stick with stock gears you can get 30+ on the Hwy at 75-80 mph with an M6, not sure how well A4's do. I could easily drive from Washington to Richmond on 1/4 tank of gas. Now that I got 4.10's there's no way, unless I slow down 10-15 mph. Fxxk That! Now I get 200m/tank to 300m/tank depending how heavy might right foot's been. My 2000 T/A has 90,000 on it and runs better than new, and it ain't been babied.

LOL....maybe to an extent, that might be true. A big nasty cam with lots of overlap dont exactly help the mpg.
