I am not a turbo guy, but I do say that you will need 5 digits just to get you started. That includes the supporting cast.

Got the whole STS kit, 42# injectors, custom tune, and a lot of dyno time for about $5500 installed. That's without an IC or meth, but it still nets you a base 5psi. It'll get you about 125-150 rwhp, which is respectable IMHO. However, FI only becomes more of an addiction no matter what setup you go with, so be prepared to keep spending $$ once you get a taste.

$5500 for the same power an X3 cam can get you is not respectable, it's laughable.

I think the STS is a good starter kit for turbo newbies and but dont rule out looking for used kits in the F/S section as well. As rotweilerWS6 mentioned, boost does get addictive so once you start going over 7psi on a regular basis u'll prolly want to think about internal upgrades etc etc.
For a beginner turbo kit though i think u'll have a solid 11sec car if done right for somewhat easy$
Other sponsers such as GMR have front mount single turbo setups starting at $4k new and i believe you can keep ur a/c

$5500 is not a "laughable" cost for a complete turbo job that gets you a basic 5psi, but if you feel you have to spend the 5 digits on a turbo setup to make it "respectable"(??), be my guest. Nothing wrong with going all out, but personally, I dont have a money tree growing in my backyard. Upgrade it later to a bigger turbo, add meth or an intercooler to run more boost, but at least the framework is in place to get you better numbers down the road. Besides, he asked for cost on turbos, not on X3 cams. I was merely giving input on one option. This isnt an STS-hater thread.

it all depends on how much power you want to make....If you can be happy with 450-500rwhp than you can do it for ~$7k with either STS,groundZero,or Hiflow etc,if you want more than that its a good idea to get a forged shortblock,so add another $4k for that, and fuel stuff.its all in what your goals are.

honestly I'd figure 8 grand to be safe and have it done right. that's not including a built shortblock.

fuel system, clutch, driveshaft, 12bolt/9inch rear end, ...and if you stay on the stock bottom end, that kit is way overkill.

I'm not hating on the STS kit at all. He is asking because he is money conscious and the STS kit and components are not cheap.

I would feel pretty bad paying twice as much as the next guy and getting waxed by his all motor car. That is what we mean by "respectable". The supporting cast to your kit will put you really close to those 5 figures that I stated previously.
