Tranny grenaded and driveshaft broke @ 130mph
I was on my way to Ft.Worth from Houston yesterday coming up for the weekend. My buddy was following me on his Suzuki 600 and we decided to do a little racing. I started in 3rd @ about 4300 rpm and put it to the floor. Banged 4th and kept on pullin. By this time we were side by side and I thought what the hell let's hit 5th. Stuck 5th and I was doing about 5500 to 6000 rpm's. Just as I was about to let off it sounded like a shotgun went off right beside me. After the loud *** bang I emediately let off. At this point smoke started coming in from the console area. I slowed down gradually because I didnt know what the **** just happened. Once I got it over on the side of I-45N i went to put in neutral and felt nothing. I looked down and the shifter was crooked as hell and all my stuff in the console was thrown out with the bottom of the console being shattered. I step out and I found a trail of tranny fluid all the way down I-45. I looked under the car and found no drive shaft, both mufflers beat to ****, maybe my torque arm and my trans bleeding like a stuck pig from the drain hole under the slave. I havent got a chance to see what else is ruined. I walked about a mile back and found only half the drive shaft snapped in half on the shoulder. In have a cam only, spec 3, 12bolt w/ steel drive shaft. What do ya'll think would of caused this? Good news is motor is fine I think and I have extended warranty hopefully covering some of the problems.

Damn, atleast you are ok, broken driveshafts can cause some serious problems.
This is a demonstration of how important drive shaft safety loops are.
Good luck with the trans rebuild.

I dont think it was the tranny that let go, I just think that driveshaft hit its critical speed, or a U-joint failed. Steel driveshafts dont like a lot of speed at all.

My next mod will definitely be safety loop along with whatever else broke. I think it was the driveshaft, it pretty much snapped in half with a very clean break.

denny's nitrous ready
you break it, they send ya a new one
you need it balanced, shortened, new ubolts or whatever, they do it for free labor and cost of materials.
at least i read that on their site...

what kinnd of pinion angle you run? thats suprising that an aftermarket steel driveshaft broke. i've heard/seen broken alumunum ones, but not steel. i know thunderracing has every style or driveshaft from steel to carbon fiber. i'd call them and see what they think. and not to be a bummer, but be prepared for the warranty to not cover this. a-lot of extended warranty companies have a no mod clause in their contracts, and the ones that dont will try every trick in the book to weasel out of having to give up the money. if you have GM's extended warranty, you have a better chance than with the "bootleg" warranty companies, but its still not a 100% certainty. FWIW, the local salvage yard will have what you need to get the car back on the road, and for cheap, if the warranty thing doesn't work out.
