Whining noise in engine?
Hey guys! I have a whining noise in my engine bay. You can hear it mostly in the lower RPMs it seems and lower gears. Mostly when you rev to start it off to catch the clutch. Do any of you guys know what it could be? Thanks a lot!

Could be a idler pully. I had my A/C compressor squeel on me, but I was removing that entire system about a week after it happend so I didn't do any thing to fix that problem. You can take the ac belt off to help isolate your problem. You will have to take the main belt off to get the ac belt off so roll all the pullies by hand and feel for any rough moving pullies.

I guess it could be one of many things. My car had a whining noise, left it for a year, thought it was the thrust bearing in the clutch. The slave cylinder failed, went to change the clutch at the same time. We found an outer shell of a bearing race in the center of te flywheel. This thin shell was the pilot bearing, the other pars of this bearing was fished out with a magnet. This was causing my whinning noise. Lack of a bearing on the end of the shaft. Almost like a supercharger sound while driving, could be heard on idle, but hard to hear, got louder up to about 3k, then went away by 4k.

Think it to do with the bearing on the input shaft on mine, while parked, if in neutral (manual gear box) it whines, put clutch in so input shaft dosn't move and it goes away.
May just need new oil or new input shaft bearings.

i'll have to see if it does it in neutral on my m6 but i notice i get the whining when i'm taking off too. my clutch also seems to grab really far out to me since i bought it. i don't know i hope i dont' have to put a clutch in it yet i bought it with 50,000 miles on it its only got 54,000

I think I know what the whining sound is. Look on the top of your engine between the valve covers, and check if one the performance fairies has installed a magnacharger while you were sleeping......

Do you have a SLP lid. The increase in airflow and the loss of the air dampeners will make it whine when you reavv it. MIne does the same thing. Its good-you know its workin!
--PS is that all you have to do to get trid of that damn A.I.R. pump, is just pull the fuse, then stick it back in when you smog it?
