Question Should I even consider a 12bolt w/ posi?

Ok guys.. I have a friend of mine that just installed a Moser 12bolt into his car only a couple hundred miles ago, if that. He made some passes on it with a stock motor, while his race engine was being built, and was playing with his trans brake with the stock motor just to get used to it before the race motor went in. This thing is practically new.

Now.. his plans have changed and hes going to go all out and get a spooled rear end and he knows Im looking for a 12bolt. His rear end has everything I want EXCEPT it has a Eaton Posi unit... instead of a soft locker like I originally wanted. 33 spline, 3.73s, no trac, ABS, girtle.... only thing is it has the posi. I have a chance to buy this thing at an absolute STEAL.

I plan on racing my car a handfull of times.. on slicks... I dont race a LOT but go to the track ocassionaly. I do a LOT more street driving vs track racing in my car.

I originally said screw it and was going to get a 9" but was talked into getting a 12bolt instead.

What do you think I should do? Get the 12bolt with a couple hundred on it with a posi? Or go my original route and get one new with a locker? Or screw it all and stay with the original plan of a 9"?

The Eaton posi tends to be the weak link in the 12 bolts. If I was in your position I would get it and install a TruTrac replacing the Eaton or a Detroit if you prefer.
Sounds like a good deal to me if your getting it for a steal.

With the M6 and the power you're making I'd get a 9", but I'd also have a hard time passing up a good deal on a 12 bolt.

If it's that good of a steal, buy the TruTrac and put it in like Ryan said.

I thought of that too, getting this and replacing it with the TruTrac... is it hard to sell a 12bolt Eaton Posi unit? How much is the TruTrac?

Thanks for the help guys.

Unless you are getting the 12 bolt for waay less than my prices below, I'd go with a 9 inch, and be done with it.

Moser 12 bolt with Truetrak center, your choice of gear
Moser 33 spline axles
Moser ABS or ABS/TCS
Moser Performance Cover
$2350.00 plus freight collect shipping (you pay shipping charge when rear is dropped off)

Moser 9 inch with Truetrak center, your choice of gear
Moser 28 or 31 spline gears
$2,400 shipped.
No extra charge*

Moser 9 inch with Truetrak center, your choice of gear
Moser 28 or 31 spline gears
Moser ABS/TCS
$2,500 shipped.
No extra charge*

*The Moser 9 inch rears come with the center section in a separate box, ready to just bolt in, making the 9 inch light enought to ship by UPS. This makes the 9 inch less expensive than the 12 bolt once shipping is factored in. Bob

Thanks Bob... those look like nice prices! Although it looks like with the 9" you only get 31 spline vs 12bolt 33s?

Even if I buy my friends Moser 12bolt, take the posi out, and have a Trutrac put in Id still be under $2k.

Decisions decisions.... I suppose I could buy his rear end and just drive it till the posi goes out.. then pick up the trutrac.

If you race occasionally, and you use sticky tires when you do, I would go for the 9" for 3 main reasons. First, the 12-bolt ring&pinion is not quite as strong as the one in the 9" (don;t remember the exact size, but if you search for it you'll se what i mean, the 9" gears are stronger). Second, you're putting some serious power to the ground. And third, your car is an M6, which means you are going to shock your drivetrain harder than most auto guys.

Unless you get a GREAT deal on the 12-bolt, I would just do it right hte first time and go with the 9". That's just me though, good luck!
