Default second time out, not good, motor making noise

went to Byron yesterday, not the best day overall.

first weather was REALLY hot, must have hit 80+ degrees, way hotter than weather report was saying, my friggin IAT's were 180 degrees, crazy.

second, i knew my tires were borderline but the backup tires we had ended up having problems. my tires WERE shot. totally. i was spinning so hard i couldn't hardly go in a straight line. 1.6X sixty foots.

made 3 passes. all 3 were 10.50's @130 on 1.6 sixties, only 9 PSI of boost. down 3 tenths and 4 mph from last week in cool air and 1.5 sixty foots at 10 PSI and 150 degree IAT's. car was running crazy rich in the heat, AFR was close to 11:1 in 3rd gear, broke the car before could get much better on that.

3rd pass start hearing a knocking from the motor. not like a rod knock, sounded like under the valvecover, i pulled the valvecover at the track and we did some dicking around and nothing came up. plugs look fine. etc.

i'm going to mess with it tonite, am hoping its something stupid like a loose rocker, a bent pushrod, or even a failed lifter(they are new, comp lifters) if its the bottom end then i'll yank it out in the next day or two and we'll see what has to be done. this shortblock has been thru an amazing amount of abuse since I had it build in 2003, so I dunno.

oh well, just hoping its nothing big so i can be back out soon and keep working on getting this setup down the track how i want it to(with new tires!)

Thats too bad, hopefully its nothing serious. When it gets hot it will go rich if its tuned on the PE, just have to lean it out in hottor weather and keep a couple different tunes. I usually just crank down the fuel pressure..

messed around some tonite. not a loose rocker. checked pushrods on passenger side where noise appears to be and they rolled fine on a flat surface.

with my poor hearing i cannot pinpoint it, a friend with good ears will have to help me determine if its coming from the shortblock or not.

even if this short needs some work i really won't be too upset about it, i have probably 200 passes on this shortblock, half of them at 7K rpm clutch dumps, has always been shifted at 7K, has been sprayed, and now shifted at 7K at 10 PSI,too. its just my time mostly, and maybe losing out on the remaining good air for this spring. i dunno, guess we'll see.

I would check stupid stuff like the flexplate/converter loosening up or something if the oil pressure looks normal. Pull off the breather when its idling and see if its chuggin smoke also.

no chuggin smoke that i could tell when i pulled the breather.

funny you should mention the flexplate/converter. that happened to a friend's car last year actually. sounded like a rod knock and it was the flex plate had loosened up. that's the kinda thing i need someone with good ears for tho, if its coming from that area, i can't tell

Bummer Sean, hope it's nothing serious. But if it is, always a good reason to upgrade some more!
Keep the 411 coming!

yup. if motor has to come out i'll be looking at ditching the current heads for some 6.0 heads to drop compression, etc, would be the time to do it.

should have a set of working ears on hand tonite to help me, so i imagine tonite i'll know if i have to pull this thing out of the car 2morrow after work or not.

no not deaf, born with like half my hearing gone, makes things difficult.

timmy came by and listened last nite, really no totally definitive answer.

I am pulling the motor out tonite after work, I think after 200 passes and alot of abuse I should just go through the short one way or another, time to do it.

Gonna do another 347, or gonna go bigger?

At 200+ hard passes and 2+ seasons, I'd say that you at least got your moneys worth, lol.

That sucks man. Was fun reading how the car was doing. But like you said, better to just check things out then push it.

well big time damage really doesn't seem likely. the car would fire up and idle like there was nothing wrong at all except the noise. cut the oil filter apart and nothing was in it, etc, etc. for all i know its some really really stupid thing doing it and i'm doing all this for nothing but that's ok things happen for a reason.

I only had 2 hours to wrench tonite but its 90 percent out of the car, another 1/2 hour tops and motor will be on a stand and i'll start taking it apart.

gut feeling is that nothing major is wrong, but we'll see.

ordered 72CC patriot heads today, time to drop compression to 9.5:1 or so and really boost this thing, gonna come back out a bit bigger and badder here hopefully

spanky--motor will stay as is. only thing that would make me do anything different is if i find a trashed piston somehow and have to rebuild then i'd build a boost short obviously.

Good to hear that is not looking like it is something major. Sounds like it is for the better.
