Default Z-Rated tires standard on 2002 Camaros?

Hey I just read a review about the Camaro and it said the Z28 (non SS) Camaros were governed at 108 unless they had a Z-rated tire option... I understand that if the car didn't come from the factory with Z-Rated tires, then it would be governed at 108. However I was under the impression (according to cars.com) that all 2002 Camaros came with Z Rated tires...

Anybody know what the deal is?

I know that some did not come with Z rated tires. My buddies 99 did not, and he had the speed limiter.
As far as the 02 LS1's I can't say for sure. Some years have different standards.

Peace,
Craig.

just go out and look, it says right on the tire what it is. should have a ZR on the tire. or you can do it the old fashion way and floor it and see if it goes past 108, mine had the govenor on it and shut off at 115 but now that i got it tuned no more of that crap. plus now i got Z rated tires.

I don't know if this helps...but I just bought my 2002 WS6 from a guy and he still had the window sticker! Anyway it has the Ram Air Perform. & Handling Pkg at one price..with all the options underneith it. The "speed rated tires" as they put it, are under that category, so I'm guess that maybe if it's an SS it would have come with the SS package.

Yeah im pretty sure all the top models (ws6/ss) came with z-rated tires, im just curious why some z28's with the same damn engine got crappy tires?

I'm not sure exactly why, but I remember in the early 90's you got the Z-rated tires with what they called the "Performance axle ratio" Which just meant 3.42's which were on all m6's and 3.23's on auto's. I think the only way to get non z-rated tires was with an auto with 2.73's which had a speed limiter... I could be wrong though, that was just my understanding years ago...

If you got a Z28 and a 6 speed, there's a very good chance you got z rated tires and the 162 mph limiter. For auto, it's various things that led to that damn 108 limiter. 2.73 gears increase the likelyhood that you didn't get the z rated as you'd have to choose another option to ensure you got the handling and z-rated tires.

I don't recall ever hearing of a SS model with a 108 limiter. Defeats the purpose of getting a SS as it had the handling package as part of getting the SS moniker which always led to z rated tires.

AFAIK the SS/WS6 both came standard with Z rated tires and the 162 limiter.
If you ordered a Z28/T/A auto you had to specify the 3.23 "performance axle ratio" to ensure you got the Z rated tires.
If you got the 2.73s you could still get the Z rated tires, but it was another option, so if you didn't specify, you got the lower rated tires and the 115mph speed limiter
The above info is per GMs brochure on the 02 Firebird (I'd assume it was the same way on the Camaro)

Yeah, my came w/2.73's and Z rated tires - listed as a $225 option. Easiest way to check any car is the tire info on the door.

My '98 came the same way.....2.73's and optional Z rated tires. Also, I've got a dealer brochure for the '02 Camaros in front of me and in the back they list a P245/50ZR-16 All Season Performance Tire as standard on a Z28. The optional tire for the Z is listed as being P245/50ZR-16 Performance Tire. So.....if the brochure is correct, there's your difference.

Well what confused me is that cars.com says that the 2000 and older models (z28 only) came lower speed rated tires standard with Z's as an option. It then said that the 2002 (and maybe 2001) came with Z rated standard... So maybe the review I read was just innacurate.

You cant go off what tire is on the car, they could have been changed at any time for any reason. Look at the door sticker at the size, you will see ZR or HR or something like that there. The Z means you got the 162 limiter, anything else im guessing got the 108. Dont think there were any mid level tires.

Now for the interesting Q. Why 162? Earo issues, tire issue, driveshaft issue??? I know on my 96 impala ss the limiter is 152 i beleive, and thats cause the driveshaft would start whipping around like a jumprope at speed higher then that. What about the F-Body? Also on the LS1 years, the 3.23 or 3.42 geared cars are the ones that got the aluminum driveshafts correct? Makes me think its the driveshaft issue again.

LS1 Camaros (Z28 Models) and T/A's (Non-WS6 Models) equipped with the Highway Performance Option are equipped with z-rated rubber (Goodyear GS-C's). My Z28 came equipped with this option.

SS's and T/A (WS6's) are equipped with Z-rated rubber (Goodyear F1's).

My car came with the 'Performance Ride and Handling' package and the Goodyear Eagle RS-A (Z Rated) tires and NO limiter. Also came with an aluminum driveshaft and the painted aluminum wheels (16x8).

If your Z-28 has lots of factory options, Then you likely also have the Z-rated tires and no limiter.

Hope this helps someone.

Didnt have time to read the whole thing, but open your door and read the decal... it will say if the car came with Z rated tires.

Every one of these f-bodys had a limiter at a certian mph or another. Your probably at 162 or 163 whatever it is and probably just havnt hit it yet. Due to the driveshaft or tires or whatever GMs reasons were, all LS1s and im pretty positive all LT1s had speed limiters. Unless tuned out by someone at some point in the cars life. If SS's and WS6's had limiters, they all did.

Most Fbodies, Z28's the T/A's to know early recollection from 2000, if the gearing was 3.42's<--stock gearing for ALL 6 speeds then Goodyear Eagle RSA's came standard and they were Zrated. 2.73 geared A4's also had RSA's. The only cars that were A4's to get the Goodyear GSC (old Gatorback) were the 3.23 option gear ratio cars.

WS6 cars that were A4's all got 3.23 gears standard and had Zrated tires. Goodyear Eagle F1's were standard tires, also on the SS even with SLP added options.

Good memory, I have had both since 2000 and auto with 3.23 gears and had to add for that other required tire and my 6 speed.
