Popped the engine at Road Atlanta
I think I pretty well futzed up the engine in my Firebird at the Friday Open track session at Road Atlanta. It layed down on me coming down the back straight and I let off of it at the crest of the hill. Got back into it right after the crest and it started making a bit of noise. I checked the temp and oil pressure and both were good so I once again got back into the gas after 10B and that's when I decided that since I was right at the pits I would go ahead and pull in. Good thing too, I let off the gas as I was coming into the pits and it shut off. At first I thought it was a broken rocker or a push rod or something but I'm pretty sure it's a terminal condition. Gonna go get it Sunday. O-well, not that let down because I have had alot of fun with it and beat on it pretty well. It had over 250 1/4 mile passes, bout the same amount of AutoX passes, well over 100 miles of track time at Road Atlanta and around 55K hard street miles that includes a crapload of play up in the mountains.
I think it's time to get a big engine now,,, I'm thinking I want something like 500-550RWHP! Gotta start looking around and looking at different short block options now. Any opinions, especially sorta local?

That's gotta hurt. Even though you've gotten your money's worth with the factory block, it still has to sting knowing you're about to spend some serious coin.
I honestly just want a 382. Simply drop a 4" stroke crank into the LS1 and I'm done. I don't need to have the 402 and the extra expense. I'm going the D1 Procharger route and I'll probably need a shortblock around a year after. (Addictive boost)
Hopefully your block is Ok, they can just go .10 over with the service hone and stroke the beast. It'll save a bit of $$$ in the long run if you can live without 20 extra cubes. (402)
Please don't put an iron block in there.

Nope not gonna do a iron block. I really want something big though. I like torque and that's one good way of getting it. I really don't want forced iduction on this car because I'm gonna use it alot for lapping sessions. A supercharger or a turbo just means more weight up front and more stuff to break. If it were a drag car/street car only I wouldn't hesitate one bit on getting a turbo or blower. I had a Buick GN and loved it. I just want one hella strong bottom end and a bullet proof valve train. I want it to take 30 minute open track session with ease.

Dang Jud that sucks....that hawk did run good....good enough to put me out in the last shoot-out....I just hope mine holds out....if it goes I'm gonna do the same thing your thinking about 402-408 except with an iron block and spray the heck out of it.....

There are a number of vendors on here that offer 402 short blocks..some are a a real nice price level..Scroggin-Dickey for example has all forged 402 for around $3800....TSP would be another one in that ball park $$$$..torque is king..the difference in cubic inches between a 346 and a 402 or larger in producing torque is huge..If you don't beleive it take a ride in a Z06 with the 7 liter engine and you will become a believer...

Just a generic statement. Just want a good motor from someone that will stand behind their work. Don't want to spend thousands of dollars and lots of time only to have more problems.

A recent edition of GMHighTech magazine had about 20 LSx engine packages. (short, long block 346-427)
The most recent had several types of engines, but theres an issue about 6 months ago that has all LSx engines. I can search for it if you want to get it. I'm going to be in your neck of the woods for that cruise tomorrow.(Sunday)

Bring it with you to the mountains. I'll be running around up there on the bike. Look for a red and white R1 with a rider wearing red and white leathers and a helmet. What time are ya'll gonna be up there?

I was going to be at the Waffle House at 11 to meet a friend. If ya'll are still around at 10:30 I'll grab the magazine. Otherwise I'll be looking for a crapload of cars up there. Thanks for bringing the magazine.
