Default Want to go back to black face gauges

I recently aquired a 1997 Aniverssary Z28. The car has white face gauges which I don't care for. I'd like to go back to the stock gauges. The question is,. how is the best way to accomplish this ? Can I buy the black overlay from the Chevrolet parts counter ?

I doubt they are actual white gauges. They are most likely overlays, and most likely adhesive overlays. I would first pull them off the gauges. Generally they will pull off clean within 2 years of installation. After that it will probably leave adhesive residue. I would try goof off to remove it. It shouldn't hurt anything since it's plastic.
As far as buying the stock black "overlay", I am sure you will have to buy the entire bezel, which will be expensive. I don't think you can buy only the face.

You can't buy the just part of the IP cluster. Comes as whole unit. I have a spare with about 50K on it. Got it from a junkyard! Always helps to have spares.

Wouldn't you have to remove the needles to get the white overlay off?

Since white face gauges are so popular anyone want to swap bezels ? Is mileage stored in the cluster and if so how would I get it corrected? My car has 37k miles ... . I'd do a straight up swap to the first person who could send me theirs with my mileage "flashed" into it ....

It would be much easier to just remove the white overlays. If you swap clusters mileage will not change for the vehicle. Typically the mileage on the vehicle at time of swap is recorded, and then the miles put on the new odometer is added to what was originally recorded. Seriously, though, removing the overlays should not take you more than a 1/2 hour.

the issue is that the old overlay was removed, right ? And you cannot buy just the overlay from the dealer ? am I confused ? Maybe this is easier than I think ?

Yes, you are making it a little more difficult lol. You know that the stock gauges are printed on one huge piece of plastic. When you put white overlays on, you stick them right over the stock plastic gauges. Just like a sticker. The stock gauge is still there because you just "stuck" new overlays over on top of it. So, just peel the white overlays off like a sticker, and voila! Stock black gauges!!11!!1! Again, the stock gauges are not overlays, its all on piece of plastic. That is why you cannot buy just the stock "overlays", because, again, it is a plastic piece not sold seperately but sold as one whole cluster.

Well, since the black overlay is gone from my cluster it loooks like I'll need to swap clusters? Can I buy another cluster and swap over the top plastic piece including the overlay onto my electronics behind it ? I'm thinking flashing my mileage into another cluster will be difficult? ughhhhh!!

As far as I know: On Camaros and Trans Ams the milage is stored on the computer, not the cluster. On 'vette's it's stored in the cluster.

I was under the impression that mileage is stored in the cluster as when I see these on Ebay they also have the mileage listed in the auction ?

Also, I don't think I've seen black overlays.

they could say the milage go so you know how used a part is. Kinda like when someone selling a cam says only used for 2,000 miles. Savvy?

Please someone post some definative answers to this. At work, no time to search during lunch.
