Default What is the best paint gun you can buy?

Is there a certain brand that is better than others, or brands to stay away from? I want a HVLP gun that will give good results to learn with and give professional results. Suggestions?

There are several brands that are good: Sata, DeVillbiss, Binks are a few. I use a Sata Jet NR2000. It's one of the best ones out there. But it comes with a hefty price tag...around $600.

Ya that satajet is top of the line. you'll need different tips depending on what your spraying, and profesional painters use seperate guns for primer, base, clear, and candy. I just got a Devillbiss with three tips and plan on using it for primer and base and getting the satajet rp for clear coat.

Yea, I forgot to mention that. I use 1.3 tip for base and clear, 1.5 tip for primer and metal flake. I just use a cheapo HVLP gun for primer though.

I have a DeVilBiss Finish Line 3 FLG-3 that I do all my work you have seen in this forum with, I have 1.3mm for base and clears, 1.5, 1.8, and I use the 2.2 tip for DuraTec or high build primers...It's awesome and definately a good gun. I would get SATA but I'm not a painter, just do custom things once in a while. So it didn't justify spending twice the amount on a SATA

well i really dont see a point in buying a 600+ dollar gun if your only going to be usuing it one time, see what i mean? if this is something that you do more than a one time thing then yeah but if it's only going to be used once in a blue moon....might consider a lower quality one

I bought a cheap pair of hvlp guns at a body shop supply house for $180 it worked great for primer and the base, but wouldn't spray clear worth a damn.

I agree, but I don't do body work for a living...just for myself and I take on side jobs for some cash to fund my projects. And you usually get what you pay for. Believe me, it's a lot easier to wet sand and buff a car when it's been sprayed with a good gun.

i bought a sharpe finex gun about two years ago, it was $100, it worked great and i was told its a great starter gun. i used it for base and clear, then cleaned the **** out of it and sold it for 80 or something on ebay.

id suggest that, and then the cheapest one u can find for a primer gun.

I've got a NIB Sata HVLP (have to check on model) sitting around. My dad ordered it before he died, and never had a chance to use it (actually, I have a ton of autobody tools I'll probably never use). PM me if you're interested, and I'll come up with a price, or possibly post it in the for sale section.

SATA's do seem nice (I've never used one, just compared specs). What you might consider, though, is that SATA's take a LOT of air. Like 15+ CFM for most of their models. If you're doing this at your house, you'd better have a dang good compressor (probably a 7.5 "true" hp 20+ cfm model).

I went with the DeVilbiss GFG-670, it's rated at 10 cfm. Easier to find a compressor to work with the lower consumption units. If you're at a shop, air shouldn't be a problem.

I will be doing this at home on smaller projects. I cant manage 20cfm with my current setup. I could manage the 10 cfm as I set right now. That is good information since I was not figuring my compressor into the question.

Thanks guys for the info.

What makes one gun worth $600 and others $100? Is the quality of how it sprays consistant with how it is made (i.e, materials used, etc.), or are results tied more towards the tips themselves?

Quality of how it sprays and the materials used. German designed and built. Kinda like comparing a rolex and a timex...sure they both keep time, but one is made with top quality precision parts and hand assembled.

If you are a beginner painter and you use a cheaper gun, the chances of orange peel, runs, etc. are much more likely than with a quality piece. When I first started body work about 2 years ago (in just a 24x30 shop at my house) the first time I shot clear (with the sata) the finished product looked about as good as your average body shop. Now that I have had some experience, I can roll out some really nice work. Cheap gun + clear= .

Sata does rate their air consumption kinda high. But it really doesnt use that much. I have this compressor http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...+%26+Inflators and it barely phases it.
