WTF! Trans popping out of 3rd and 4th
Well this POS has been rebuilt under war. 4 times. Last year before I put it away for the season it was shifting like butter. NO problems best ever. Since then I did a clutch. At first it was notchy in every gear and I read that that is normal for break in. Well now every other gear is fine but 3rd and 4th. I have had many of the common issues most others have like popping out of 3rd and sticking in 4th but never popping out of 4th. So I don't know what to do. I have no $ for rebuild right now and was hoping I was missing a detail. Please help? I bled the **** out of it vacuum bleed. I did this last year and it was perfect. This time it made no difference. Please advise. I even removed the stops in the shifter thinking that may be it.
TIA

Well clutch hydraulics are very important to the shift feel& wear & tear on the trans.
Adjustable master? If it is poppin out, it is too late though something is tore up.
They wont take hard driving w/ so-so hydraulics & stock internal trans. Something usually gives.

Damnit! It is an 02 with stock hydraulics. Clutch grabs mid way and all other gears shift fine. When I put it into 3rd or 4th it feels like it is in and fine, but once I let the clutch out it throws the shifter out. So what is broken? Fork? Keys? Locks? F'n GM garbage. WRENCHER. PM coming at ya.

Check adjustment on your shifter first. Other than that, mine did the same - it was broken keys. I abused my tranny but I rebuilt with stock keys and it fixed the problem for $9

Took stops out. SP. How easy is it to replace the keys myself? Do I need to pull everything apart? Do the gears need to come off the shaft and be pressed? I do not have a puller for this.

sound like your aluminum shift fork is bent.. time for a steel 3-4 shift fork.. and while you're at it, might as well replace the guides with bronze ones..
Give Joe @ T56rebuilds a call.. he did my tranny as well as many others on this board.. very quick, very good prices.

I know Joe does good work, but I know of a few local guys and shops that can do it so I do not have to pay shipping and crating. They told me a steel fork went in so ???

Mine used to do the same exact thing. It was broken keys in the 3/4 syncro. I shift 4th like I am going to rip the shifter out of the car when I am at the track. If you have the bumpstops you shouldn't be bending forks.

And the winner is.......shift fork pads!
I am replacing the 1-2 and 3-4 pads with bronze and getting billet keys for 3-4. No one seems to make billet 1-2 keys. I hope that means I will never need them. Turns out the trans already has carbon fiber blockers and steel fork so I basically will have a performance rebuilt trans.
