Default My first trip to the drag strip (1/8 mile)

I've had my car for about 8 months and finially got a chance to go to a drag strip with some friends for the first time ever. We got there around 1 just as they were opening on sunday and it was hot and humid. There weren't many people there and I was one of the first to run. My friend rode along with me to explain the lights. I bypassed the water box the first time and got up to the line. My first trip down ever was my best run, not much wheel spin and I got down the track in about 8.7et, .229rt, and 85mph. I was very impressed for my first run ever. Unfortunatly I didn't get the time slip for that run.

I made several more runs down the track and had some problems with traction. The track seemd to hook worse as the day went on.

The highlight of my day was beating a brand new ls2 6.0 GTO 6 speed. We were lining up and he looked over at me and said "I hope that v6 can run with me". I guess he didn't see the Formula on the side. We ran and I just looked over at him as I passed him. I got down the track in 8.9 compared to his 9.1. We ran each other once more after that and once again I beat him.

All in all it was a blast. I'm addicted now. The next thing I want to do is work on my suspension and chassis so I can hook better. I'm also thinking about getting some slicks to take with me next time.

I have pics and videos that I will post later tonight.

Congrats! I'm sure there is more left with the mph you have, 8.50s should happen with a good hook. Think about some drag radials (M/T are my brand of choice) instead of slicks, that way you can drive out on them and they are easier to learn on than slicks that grow and are a little more squirmy at the top end.

Cool you had a good time. I agree with Derek about the drag radials .

Good luck.

"I hope that v6 can run with me".

What surprised me the most is I never got a red light. I think my best rt was a .229, how does that rank against most people's?

That means you had a .729 reaction time (Just take .500, and add whatever time from there). A perfect light would be .000

Nice runs. I believe your car should be running in the mid to low 13's based on it's 1/8 mile time. That mph is rather high too, as i'm only trapping at 86mph in the 1/8th, and I have a mild cam (Ran a 13.1 sec. 1/4 mile at 109mph). Put some drag radials on your car and you will see 12's.

Why do you add .500 to your rt? I'm new to all this.

I can't wait to take it out the the Darlington 1/4 mile that just recently opened back up.

As I recall there are too different type of lights (.500 tree, and the .000 tree). If you were at a .500 tree you would have a - sign by your R/T, meaning that you redlighted.

Basically you wanna get a perfect 5 tenth reaction time at the lights. I always launch at the 3rd ember. My best so far is .019.

Actually, the .500 (and pro .400) are the old method of measureing reaction times. The new method was intruduced with the LED bulbs, since they comes on instantly. So if you have a .000 light the track is using LEDs, if you had a .500 the track was using incandesent bulbs. Most track are now switching over to the new method to avoid confusion, which has already happened. You just need to pay attention to what method your track is using to judge your reaction times. No need to add/subtract .500 to your RTs.
