alright here is what you need to do.
get ALL of the old (r-12) out of the system. by the "retrofit" kit i think they run like 7 or 8 bucks. then do some research and find out what kind and how much PAG oil you will need. (the standard i think is like 1 oz per unit) then add r-134a until the gauge reads full. a can of refriderant is like 8 bucks and the gauge is like 4 or 5 i think. but if you have a leak you can by what they call a all-in-one where it will have your PAG OIL your r-134a and some stop leak.

the retrofit kit, what is involved with changing the parts to work with r134a cause i know u cant just dump it in a r12 system. but i would think changeing the parts to work might be a little involved. i did find this stuff called freeze12 which is suposed to be a direct replacemtn for r12 systems no converting like on r134a stuff. and its farily cheap. please someone give some kind of step by step on the process of converting to the new stuff if u know how. i have never touched a/c stuff before, also where do i get one of these retrofit kits

the o rings is a different story some you'll have to replace some will handle it i don't know why but if you have the time and can i would replace the o rings while i was doing all this.

ok ive read a little more into it, i see the high and low ports are the valves that u put the stuf in by i get that now. i also understand the retrofit kits has the adapter valves to hook up the new cans to the valves. so is that really all thats involved is suking out the old **** and changing those valves and pumping some r134a in there?
