Default Strange Intake Question

This may sound kind of odd, but I have used those tornado air spinning things that slip inside your intake on two of my cars now and I have been very pleased with the results. I plan on putting one of these on my '01 TA. They don't make on big enough to fit in the bellows, so I though I would put it in the neck of my MTI lid, just in front of the MAF. I kind of doubt this, but has anyone done this already? If so how did it work and if not I'll let you know how it goes.

Good gawd, all you are doing is slowing down and blocking the air flow.

That's exactly what I though when I first tried them, but they really do work. I used one in my '94 Camaro and when I took it out, there was a BIG difference. I'll give it a shot, then post the results. If it does nothing or hurts performance, no big deal, I'll just pop it out.

You need to try it on a dyno or at the track, back to back, a few times in a row. Nobody really cares about butt-dyno results. Seems like all sorts of car manufacturers would have been using those by now if they really worked.

FWIW, my wife's "98 Escort came with one for the factory. It might not be the name brand "tornado", but it serves the same purpose. I hate the way it makes the car hold rpm's in between shifts.

Why would you want swirling, slow air? That's the exact opposite of what you should be trying to accomplish. Kudos to you for trying to be inventive, but I think your creativity is misplaced here. We've all done about everything we can do to the intake. Basically, all that can be done is the following:

Lid / Filter / FRA / FTRA / FIPK / Bellows / SSRA / Ram Air Tubes / BG Ram Air Kit / !WS6 & SS baffles

I think that pretty much covers it.

The best type of induction is forced induction.

Good Luck,

Dan

Edit: I forgot about porting the TB and MAF or MAF ends. Also, the EGR and TB Bump stop mod.

I have seen those things dynoed at MTI. You will lose Hp with the Tornado on the LS1 engine. Or you can not listen to us & do what you like. This subject has been coming up occasionally for several years now. Do a search here and on LS1.com if you want more input. Nineball was also there the day the car I saw was dynoed. He will tell you the same thing.

Thank you Dan and Les for your constructive criticism backed up by facts (not just opinion). That is exactly the kind of feedback that I was looking for. I've done the lid and filter, the free ram air, the de-screened MAF, and the TB bypass. I guess I'll port my MAF and get a smooth bellows and leave it at that. Do you guys think that the FTRA or the supersucker is worth the cost over the Free ram air mod? Thanks for your responses.

The FTRA is a proven mod. It'll help your 60' over the FRA mod. The FTRA won't suck up as much hot air from the motor during your launch. The FRA is a very good mod though in my opinion. It helped my air starved Z28 breathe much better.

I would NOT recommend porting your MAF if you have an A4. It'll be fine with an M6. You might want to consider buying MAF ends instead of porting it. They are fairly inexpensive.

I highly suggest doing the throttle body bump stop mod. My throttle blade wasn't even close to being completely open.

http://installuniversity.com/install..._bump_stop.htm

I have no experience with the Super Sucker. The location of it worries me though. My LS1 is a daily driver (even in snow ) so water intake would be a huge problem for me. I've talked to guys who'd cut a tenth or two off at the track with it.

Hey Debacle

Take it easy bro. NightHawk had a few questions so he posted up. No big deal. Sometimes searches don't return the info you're looking for. Escpecially right now since the search feature isn't working properly! We're all here to help one another. There's no need to discourage anyone. Sometimes posting repetative questions sparks new conversation with new info.

my 2cents

Just out of curiosity, it would be interesting to see what the Tornado does placed in front of the MAF, then dyno'd again placed after the MAF. (stock MAF, w/screen,ported w/o screen)
Hey, I've got an open mind.

I never said that anyone doesn't know what they're talking about. Sorry, but there's only one other guy in my town that I know that knows anything about rodding cars (and he drive a Mustang ) You guys are it when it comes to bouncing an idea off someone. Thank you guys for the support. BTW I have been on LS1.com, installuniversity.com, f-body.org, and every other LS1 site so many times I can just about recite them by memory. I ALWAYS do my research before preforming a mod, but in some cases, there's no research to fall back on. So you ask someone. Isn't that the whole point of this site?

Thanks, GWJ, for having an open mind. I though the same thing about the MAF thing, but I guess its a mute point by now. What kind of Trans cooler do you have? I'm in the market for one and would appreciate some input.

Well, I have personally seen at least 10 threads here and on LS1.com with a similar title. After numerous replies (quoting dyno numbers) to the same general question you posted stating that the Tornado is a flaming POS, you get the idea. Sorry but I think that there are plenty of resources out there (search). I use them, so should everyone else.

U need to simma down now. As you can see from my paltry number of posts, I am new to LS1Tech.com, so my freaking bad. If it bothers you so much why did you post a resonse in the first place? I'll use the search next time before I start a new topic. I didn't know it was such a crime to post a simple question, even if it is one that has been asked before.

yes, I did see that you were new. My first response was my only planned response to this post, as this post will be my last. Someone has to think, if this has been "seen on TV", it might not be worth a sh*t. There was no post directly at you personally, since I don't know you. I just wish people would use the search (I know it has been screwed lately) instead of posting every question that crosses their mind. That's all. No hard feelings.
