Default Head and Cam on a budget?

I want to achieve about 400rwhp in my 2001 SS A4. I have $4000.00 to spend. I also want to remain streetable and not vary my idle too much. Can someone recommend a good package?

Oh, I have just a lid and a magnaflow catback.

Get yourself the rest of the external stuff, headers, good Y setup, pulley, all that stuff, and get a good sized cam, and a fast setup. that will get you to 400 rw, and not have to touch the heads on the car.

Note, you live in the republic of Kalifornia? Not sure what you can get away with emmissions wise there, wht the smog testing that is done, you may find it alot harder to get to your goals with the testing required.

I'd say look at the CheaTR cam at Thunder Racing. It's designed to work with the stock manifolds, which you need to pass CA inspections.

Then heads, there's quite a few that should work. Patriot, AFR, MTI, etc. Depends on if you want to spend $1400, $2000, or $3000 for the heads. But if you go with a cam, you'll at least have to swap the springs, and new heads usually come with new springs.

Spend the rest on a F.A.S.T./N.W. 90/90 and a really good tune, and maybe some high flow cats, and you should definately be past 400 at the wheels and still pass an inspection.

Isn't a Fast 90/90 way to much when he would be running stock head and stock cubes? Since he got an 02 he already has the LS6 intake.

I would do, ported TB, pulley, headers good ypipe, dual exhaust, 3500 Stall, TR224 cam, and a good tune.

I currently have on order TSP 2.5S 5.3 Heads with 224R cam. I was told that this setup WILL pass smog both by TSP and by Rob @ Strictly who will be installing and tuning the car. PM me if you want to get together to see what # i get.... obviously eveything will happen hopefully within the next couple of weeks.

i see you don't have a stall either, may want to get that first! will make a huge differnece in your car's performance.

2nd I lived in cali, home of the smog ****'s! you will definelty fail with LT headers! won't even pass visual let alone the load test smog machine.

or...find someone that will just pass you, but those days are gettiing harder and harder due to huge fines if they get caught!

so stay with stock manifolds and upgrade everyting around it. sucks because lt's would give you pretty good amount of h.p. with the cam and now is going to be kinda choking it out top end.

You could always have the inside of a set of manafolds ported out, might help the cause some, or go with shorty's, I'm sure that they would be o.k. And in the Y pipe off the shorty's, I'd set it up with a 3 bolt flange on both ends of teh cat, and have a 2nd set that have a strait pip ethru the center, that you can easily and quickly swap in and off, if you get stopped you can pop the hood and they will see the cats there, and you can swap the other cats in for testing.

I agree with marcus26... A nice stall and a cooler should be first! I **** my pants when I put mine in and floored it for the 1st time.

the only problem with having hollow cats is this. the cops in cali when they pop your hood and see some modifications they write you a ticket for no carb# and then you have to go to a referee and they know all the mods of what you can or can not do. the cop does not have to exactly know what is legaland what is not. he writes the ticket and let the referee decide..that's how is goes! trust me iv been there a lot.

and you have to pay the referee also..around 100 bucks if i remember right and if it fails, guess what you got to correct the defects and go back AGAIN to the same referee! so ya you get screwed good!
