Default i just went to the machine shop and...

I have a new gen III aluminum 5.3 engine that i need bored and honed and decked. They said in order to deck the block, first they need to bore it and hone it then i need to mock up the pistons, rods, and crank in order to see how much they need to take off of the deck. Is this completely nessisary? or can i get away with a generic deck height for this block? Im pretty new to engine building as the most i have done was rebuilding a head for my bmw. Thanks!

If you were looking for 0 deck, which is the case in most old SBC's, I'd say yes. Since the LS1/5.3 pistons are "out of the hole" or above deck, I would only remove what I had to to get the deck true. So I'd say tell them to bore/hone and only remove what is needed to true up the deck. Shouldn't be any need for mock up.

Get it decked to make sure it's true and there are no imperfections, that is ridiculous that you have to bore/hone a block to desk it, that's a crock.

but for my application it would be just fine to get it all even and smooth and not go through all of that? right?

Getting an even, smooth deck surface will get you the basic necessity, getting the head gasket to seal. They process they want to use will help in making sure that each cylinder has the same compression. Your just leaving power on the table, but in your application I guess that's OK...

The engine will be pretty stock, just a few bolt ons. Doing the decking that way would be more for a race engine or something you want the absolute maximun power from right?
