Default 1973 455 question

a buddy of mine came across a 455 from a 73 grandville. i know nothing about the older motors, so i ask for some help. he wants to put this in his 81 TA (p.o.s. 301!). he also has the trans out of same car. is there anybody that would know what 455 he has. we speculate is is the standard 455, not the H.O. or the SD. any help would be greatly appreciated.

From the Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975:

The base 1973 Grand Ville V-8 was the Code W engine. The Code Y engine was optional.

Code W: 455 cid/4-V/8.0:1 compression/215 hp @ 3600 rpm
Code Y: 455 cid/4-V/8.0:1 compression/250 hp @ 4000 rpm (with dual exhaust)

most likely just standard 455 unless someone has done a swap. no matter what it is better than a 301

I have to say I chuckled when I read this one...SD? HO? not likely.
It's your basic lo po 455. With the right compression and cam it can be a stump puller.
Fit right in to your buddies car.

I've always wanted to do a 455 in something. This article shows what kind of potential they have with bolt-ons and off the self heads:

www.tracnsamcountry.com and www.performanceyears.com are going to be your new best friends. If its an SD or a true roundport HO, you just found the holy grail, basically. Highly highly highly unlikely. None were fatcory installed, and I doubt anyone would take apart a really rare T/A to shove the engine into a Grandville.

thanks for all the help, like i said, we figured is was a standard 455, but i though i'd ask. i actually saw the motor in the car, it looked correct, with all the stickers and stuff. he was gonna demo the car, sold motor and trans and all other accessories (w/o rad.) for $350. didn't run, but was in complete form. my buddy couldn't pass up the deal.

$350 for a 455/TH400 is a STEAL these days... Just the block is worth quite a bit more. Good score.
