Default Synthetic Trans Fluid.........

What aftermarket Synthetic Trans fluid would you guys recommend for the T56 instead of the Dextron III, or is it better to just use the Dextron III?

Thanks

I was going to run Royal Purple in my T56, but then I started reading horror stories about the synthetic fluid causing water to react with the paper-lined blocker rings, or something to that effect.

Maybe somebody else can elaborate?

Actually it has to do with certain synthetics being based of a particular quality ester that is very hygroscopic (water abosorbing). It's the water content that actually eats away at the paper blockers. This particular ester based oil also does not carry the same standards certifications (API/SAE http://eolcs.api.org/) of other Dexron III oils and thus will not be honored in a warranty by GM (koff. Redline KOFF)...

and why shouldn't they honor a warranty where the incorrect fluid was used???

Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal purple synthetics carry the certification, are not anywhere near as hygroscopic and will be fine in your transmission. I'm switching from Mobil 1 to Amsoil in future, RP tends to thin out near the end of its life cycle.

RP Syncromesh for 80k miles. No problems.

JDP, if it just started, try bleeding clutch m/c. That helped me for awhile before I ended up changing to LS6 clutch and upgraded hydraulics.

If it has Dexron III on it and has the appropriate oil certifications then it's ok for your transmission.

The only differences will be subtle, some will need to be warmed up first for smooth shifting, others will need to be changed at normal intervals, while others can endure longer. One can't predict how your transmission will react to the fluids once in because every transmission is DIFFERENT due to the users driving it, let alone the year variances between paper/carbon fiber parts etc.

That's why it says to use Dexron III transmission fluid. It is a standard that says you can use it.

It is up to you to test it out and see which fluid works best for you. Worst case scenario, you use GM Syncromesh Fluid which is the same as Penzoil Syncromesh which is identical to Quaker State.

I tried some off the shelf dexron III shell formula to flush my transmission and then replaced with mobil 1 after a day of use.

I found zero difference in feel to the transmission. I find if you fill it from the shifter, you can get the whole change done in an hour still giving a good 15 mins to let the gasket maker material dry for the shifter.

nseldy and LightEmUpLs1- If you take a read through the following long running thread here, about every option is represented: Which T56 fluid?

As for the blocker rings failing because people run synthetic, you can again look through the feedback posted by people in this thread, the one I linked to above, or this one that I'd started a while ago on the subject: Ending the speculation: Blocker rings, who's had them fail?

Whatever you decide, hope it works for you...
