Can I start my engine without the trans. in?
Should I be able to do this without a problem? I noticed when I installed my flywheel that the gear for the starter was pushed back so it did not contact the flywheel. Is that the design of the starter? I'm waiting on my transmission so I want to get the engine started and make sure everything is good there. Thanks.

When you activate the starter to turn the engine over, the gear pops out to the flywheel and then turns it. after you let off the key, the gear should retract back. thats why when you try starting an engine thats already running, you hear the grinding. i dont see why you couldnt start it, unless having some of the sensors unhooked from the ECM prohibit it.

Yea bad news if those gears are together when your not turnin the key! But yea its actually kinda cool to see... I did it the first time i replaced my clutch and to see it goin in circles was pretty cool! And you would be amazed at how fast the motor revs when it has no clutch or trans behind it to turn!
