Pulling an LS1 out of an Fbody...
My Haynes book tells me to pull it from up top... BUT !
What do you guyz recommend ?
I am pulling the motor out of a wrecked car and I was thinking id be easier to lift the body off the motor instead since I am not concerned with getting scratches onm the body etc..
I dont have a lift but I can hook it up to 4 chain blocks and lift it that way. Quickly roll the drivetrain away and set the body back down on it's wheels.

I know that most people prefer to do it from the bottom, K member and all. But there is a post running around here that tells you how to do it from the top.
Actually here is a post for out the bottom.

out the top. I had mine out in 3 hours. trans, heads, valve covers, intake, and crank pulley were left on the motor. front acessories were removed up to the timing cover. undo the wire harness and swing it to the passenger side. lift motor slightly (support it with hoist) pull out motor mount through bolts and lift
by the way, it's far easier to mark the hood and removed it. you will need the room if pulling the trans with it.
leave the hood on if the trans is off the motor, there is room.
hit me up if you have any questions
by the way - that 3 hours was the first time I pulled an ls1 out of these cars, it gets quicker

from top
I am curious about this as well. I am going to be pulling my engine out the top pretty soon, and I would like to here about any tips or tricks that anyone remembers from pulling there engine. Would I be better off pulling keeping the tranny attached and pulling the whole assembly out? or remove the tranny and just pull the engine out the top?

Sorry I did pull the trans and radiator, condensor still in. I figured that was a given. I also pulled the starter and flywheel. Not sure if I would have had to but they had to come off anyway. I also removed plugs and unbolted headers and left the left header in and removed the right. Propped the ps pump on the inner fender (which you need a ps pump pulley remover) and wired up the a/c compressor so it hang out the bottom of the engine bay.

the car i had was wrecked in the front, i sawzalled off everything in the way, unbolted the k member and trans member, and pulled it all out the front/bottom. put the car on jackstands and lowered the motor onto a small cart and pulled it out from under the car with a dixie chopper. and who says im redneck?
