Default What's up with Dart 205s?

They get no love on here. I mean, they're a small runner, smaller chamber, stronger casting, strong springs, and cheap. Why do they get no love on here?

That's what I mean. And heck, no offense, but the only 2 guys that admit to having them (vettenuts is one of the two) have small cams under them. I'd love to see them with a Trex or G5X2,3,4,etc.

They were somewhat maligned here because there were issues with some aftermarket porting and oil usage. If you look at the last page of that thread, it is starting to appear that the answer may be finally revealed. They are good head for the money in my opinion. They don't flow the best and they are not CNC ported, but if you check on the process for CNC porting of the other heads there is a lot of weld filling and weld repair involved. I didn't want heads that had weld fill. Also, a few guys had the 243's crack under the rockers because after porting they are thin. I am not badmouthing the head shops, but I wanted something with a little more meat under the valve train. They also don't require any milling to come up with a decent CR, since the chambers are small.

There has to be a lot of them out there, J&J speed, JEGS and Summit can't keep them in stock so someone is running them. I wouldnt' worry too much about what others recommend, check into them and if you think they meet your requirements do it.

PM user Waterbug1999 on here for details. He has some good dyno numbers, but more importantly good track #'s to back it up. He has the cast version with zero issues.

I am running the Dart 205s with an F14 cam and put down 452rwhp and 423 rwtq. I am waiting to see what track times I can get when the cool weather comes. I am expecting at least 11.5s.

I was one of those with oiling issues. I went through about a quart of oil PER DAY! If you search my name and Dart, you will see some pics with the intake removed and no PCV system. I sent the heads directly to Dart due to all of the BS that was flying on this forum. The only thing Dart could find was the seals, but they also didn't think just seals would cause the oil control issues the heads had. Dart kept the heads and sent me some new heads that they did a clean-up job on to make it an even swap for me. In fact, I definitely feel I got the better end of that swap! If you want some flow numbers, here you go. I just posted them in another thread. John at Dart said that my heads flowed just slightly less than their CNC ported heads will flow when they come out.

PRC ported Stage 2 Darts

Intake...........Corr CFM.......%Exh/Int
.200............146.7
.300............210.6
.400............267.3
.500............302.1
.600............310.3
.700............308.1
Exhaust
.200............103.3............70.4
.300............143.7............68.2
.400............182.2............68.2
.500............207.1............68.5
.600............223.0............71.9
.700............232.3............75.4

Darts with cleanup work performed at Dart (not sure if 205 or 225 ports)

Intake...........Corr CFM.......%Exh/Int
.200............149.3
.300............205.1
.400............261.5
.500............293.2
.600............319.5
.700............334.0
Exhaust
.200............111.7............74.8
.300............153.3............74.7
.400............190.3............72.8
.500............218.0............74.3
.600............228.8............72.5
.700............235.7............70.6

All flow work was performed on a 4 inch bore with radiused inlets and no exhaust port adapter. I don't have flow numbers on what the box stock Darts flow, but I am sure someone on here has flowed a set. If not, call John over at Dart and I am sure he can get you some hard data.

Hope this helps a little!

Can't speak for everyone here, but for me the small cam was drivability on the street and low end power.

Glad to see it all came out in the end. You didn't happen to look at your seals did you when you pulled the heads. I am confused on some posts in the old "smoking thread" about using the dual springs with the original Dart installed one piece seal/seats. That would definitely cause some issues, but I can't believe they would do that.

I like mine... I put down 421 with 4.5* of knock (fixed now) and a slipping tranny (fixed now). The tranny let go on the 2nd WOT.. I do have a better tune now, with an addition of 150 shot of spray on my demand.. I will be getting it dynoed here in a few weeks on and off the spray..
