mobil 1 5w-40 I am thinking about switching to this oil due to oil loss/burning with its thinner sister mobil 1 5w30. Would 5w40 hurt the motor internals in anyway? just wondering, because the gm manual says only 10w30 or 5w30. thanks in advance!

5w-40 is hard to find now. They changed the marketing and now it's a Turbo-Diesel oil. I haven't found any since.
0w-40 should work well.

well I have 46k miles on the car, and the mobil 1 5w30 just isnt cutting it, because it sucks a quart every 1.5k miles. I know I need a thicker oil but totally unsure what to get, because there are like a million different opinions, wish there was someway to narrow all that down to one.

Pull off your throttle body and check out the intake manifold. If its coated in oil, you've found your problem. Remove the PCV hose from the side of the intake manifold, and either stick a breather filter on it or take the system out completely and convert to breather filters directly on the valve covers.

Basically you have 3 options - breather filter on PCV hose, valve cover breathers, or LS6 PCV system

go for the 5W-40. all BS aside, i guarantee it'll cut your consumption in half, maybe even more. you may not burn any after the swap. mobil 1 5W-30 is garbage. 5W-40 on the other hand is good stuff.

I haven't seen any M1 5W40 in my area for longer than I can remember.
I disagree.
I use M1 0W40 now. Works great even in my low mileage LS1. Oil pressure has never been too high using it.

well i didnt mean it wouldnt work, but it will wear on internal parts faster....weve seen it in everything from R1 bikes to lsx motors....its better to just use 30 like gm recommends in the lower miles, but just using a better brand of oil unlike mobil crap....

the new 5w40 "turbo diesel" oil is hard to find. only the eastern side of the state carries it.
Have you guys tried the German Made Castrol 0w30? LT1 engines love that stuff.
The whole thing with the Mobil 1 5w30 and 10w30 is that it's not a garbage oil/worthless oil, it's just not that ideal in what seems to be LS1s and LT1s. m1 5/10 w30 has a viscosity @ 100c around low 11 cst. That's the new formula. The older formula had low 10s. On average the viscosity of a 5/10 w30 is around 10.5 cst @ 100c.
Want to know what the viscosity @ 100c of the german made castrol? a whopping 12.1 cst..
I'd have to look up the 5w40 stuff.

It runs great! I doubt I would want to dig into the pcv system, because i'd prolly goof something up. It's just this whole burning oil thing can't be good on the longetivity of the motor internals, and the last thing I would want to see is this dream car of mine on the side of the road because I didn't do something about it. Now i'm afraid that thickening the oil I put in it is just going to hurt me in the long run as well, starting to look like a lose or lose situation.
