What causes some turbos to be loud and others to be quiet?
I know it might be a stupid question but I would really like to have a pretty quiet exhaust. I don't know exactly yet how I'm gonna do it and not be restictive in any way but I would like it to be quiet and only hear the turbo spooling. I know alot of it is from the turbine wheel but I would like to know why some are loud and others quiet. Does it mostly come from the turbine or does the whine come from the compressor? I alresdy know my WG will be loud.

I was hopeing that you would say that your turbo had a nice audible tone to it and not be quiet. Regardless, I think I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger on the TC76 from Jose and DR Turbo. I blame you for my smaller bank account . After seeing those pretty pics and hearing about the great spool time = to the MPT70, along with the T-netics warranty, how can you go wrong? Hopefully I will be praising you in the future. If you have any more info that will make me please post it up.

Nope its pretty silent I miss the old GT42's nice lil wheeeeeee sound It had an anti surge housing. I'm just going off personal experience here, my GT42 had an anti surge housing and made a ton of cool turbo noise. The TC76 and MPT70 are both the same in regards to the compressor inlet design...nice smooth funnel shape. Both were quiet on my particular car. I could be wrong about the covers affecting noise output.
But from Jose and Doc Turbo's great turbo recomendation i'll hopefully be making some decent power soon. A few more +'s for the TC76. Lightweight at 25lbs, small easy to place, 4 inch compressor inlet, 2.5 compressor outlet, 3 inch V band outlet on the compressor housing and has beefed up turbine shafts for added strength compared to the MPT70's small turbine shafts. MPS wheel too for under a grand
As for the smaller bank acct...i'm sorry got to share my disease with you guys, beingbrokeitis is very common to us FI addicts. **** I'm already on my 3rd turbo for no good reason

Yes re-flow covers make quite a bit more noise. Jason can machine some of the turbos with the bullet hole covers, but thats if you just want noise, and it does drop the efficiency down some.

Its kinda nice having a "quiet" turbo LOL. Now my car just sounds like a lumpy cammed LS1 when going down the road.

Backpressure, more power and spool up is still very nearly the same. Well worth the 100 extra.

Well DrTurbo? Why is it that frcdfed98 has a quiet one and Country Boy has a loud one? Maybe he doesn't have the TC unit but isn't the only difference in the two being that the compressor housing has a larger A/R? I know it's not all that simple but what would drilling holes in the inlet do for noise and how much efficiency would be lost? I really want that jet like sound. I'm seriously considering purchasing one of the TC units this week but need to know this first.
