Default heads/cam on a 98 ls1..

well im on a budget kinda, more or less shopping for slightly used parts but my question is this.. if i go with a tr224/224 112lsa or similiar cam what heads would you guys recommend. i cant afford some nice ported afr's or darts or anything but even the 241 casting is better than the shitty heads that came on the 98. or would you guys try to find a set of decent ported 5.3l heads to up my cr? i dont plan on fi any time soon, im just trying to get a rundown of what you guys think i should do...

a set of 5.3s would give a good bit higher compression...wouldnt be bad with that cam

what about flow versus stock heads on it now? would i loose flow? or would the gain in compression help? would those 5.3's affect ptv clearance or pr length?

I'm in the same boat that you are. I just bought some stock LS6 heads cause i wanted something better than the 853 castings, however i had a local shop clean up the valve seats cause they looked like ****. It gave me a little over 30rwhp and 30 rwtq. however the numbers in my sig or old, after the new tune and home ported TB they actually closer to 430 RWHP and 420rwtq

nice... ls6 heads were a thought but i figured the higher compression from the 5.3's would be beneficial also, just wanted to find out on here...

I went with the 5.3 heads but they were CNC'd and bigger valves. Amazing power increase. I was told that the stock 5.3 heads flowed better than stock 98 heads right off the bat. With the extra compression it adds up to more power overall. No PV clearance problems either and the CNC'd heads with the bigger valves were not that exspensive and well worth the money. Just look at my sig and you can see the power I made with a little cam.
