2000 SS Camaro. What kind of oil?
I was just curious what kind of oil a 2000 SS calls for? I thought all of them came with Mobil 1, am i right? Isn't there a sticker that says it also? Im not sure where though...
Also, if you have a slight ticking noise and you use a cheaper oil, would mobil 1 help the problem? I would think the ticking is lifters...This car is not mine, it's for a friend and im just trying to get some more information.
Thanks.

They all have a case of piston slap, some more noticeable than others. As for oil, I use and recommend Castrol Syntec 0W-30 Euro Formula. I like it a lot better than the Mobil 1 I was using.

Seriously, tell him ti try M1 5-40 or 0-30 German castrol (purchased at Autozone and says "made in germany" on the back in tiny letters, only comes in 0-30 but is VERY thick for a 0-30.

Mobil 1 never came shipped with any f-body when new. Only vettes, Benzs, bmws, etc came with M1. I've been using M1 5w30 since the first 1000 miles, but now am switching to GC 0w30, since everyone is raving about it. I've always had piston slap when cold/startup, going away after 3min of idleing. When I change her oil for storage, I'll see if I still have the slap with GC. Tell your friend to try GC, it's a little more expensive then M1, but a better oil, so say the 'experts'.

i'm so tired of these oil posts i wish people would just search, there are 15,000 of these...
mobil 1 5W-30 sucks in an LS1. this should not be debated. don't believe me? get it analyzed. you'll stop using it on your own. 30 weight mobil 1's (that includes 10W-30, also) are simply too thin for an LS1. they are a borderline 20 weight. you're actually putting closer to a 5W-20 in your crankcase. LS1's are bigger V8 engines. they have larger clearances and this water they sell as Mobil 1 5W-30 is simply too thin. this is why most people complain of loud ticking, excessive oil consumption and piston slap. they're putting water in their crankcase.
i would not recommend royal purple. you gain horsepower on them because they are also thin. patman says their race stuff holds up well, but i cannot recommend their normal stuff. royal purple = hype IMO.
redline is out of the question IMO. any redline. they are not starburst approved and i've heard of engines actually failing due to simply using redline oil. stanger can tell you about redline running a transaxle. let's not even go through that multi-thousand dollar repair
the oils i would recommend for the LS1:
- GC 0W-30: it's what i'm running now. while it won't take away all the LS1 tick, it will likely quiet things down. it's known to battle oil consumption and in some cases completely stop it. its high detergent level has patman running it for 9,000 miles. it's that good of an oil. it does not break down nearly as easily as mobil 1 does. it also shows on average the best wear analysis tests of any oil in an LS1. again, make sure it says "made in germany" on the back. the USA made stuff is not fully synthetic.
- mobil 1 5W-40: not to be confused with mobil 1 0W-40. this stuff is in a league of its own. it's formulated for trucks, SUV's, turbo diesels and the like. it's not a mainstream mobil 1 oil. it's thicker than their garbage 30 weights so it provides better engine protection. it's formulated for more heavy duty environments so it doesn't break down as easily. i will be trying mobil 1 5W-40 in my next oil change.
- shell rotella synthetic 5W-40: while i have no experience with this oil, i do hear good things about it. it shows good wear analysis results, so it gets the from me.
- amsoil 5W-40: again, i have no experience with this oil, but it is known to combat LS1 ticking. it also is known for holding up well, as is the entire amsoil product line.
so which is my final recommendation? none of them in particular. no LS1 is exactly the same. all have their small minute differences due to imperfect manufacturing precision. i recommend you try each oil, run it for 4,000 miles and send it away to an oil analysis company such as Blackstone Labs. they'll analyize your oil for $20. they'll send you a free kit, you send them 4 ounces of your oil, ship it away and you'll get your wear results back in the mail. from there on, you should run the oil that shows the best wear numbers and reduces engine noise the best.
