cam without converter?
Hey guys, I am going to be replacing the lifters on my 98 TA, A4. I figure if i have it down that far i should upgrade the cam. But i don't want to invest in a converter right now. Any suggestions on how big i can go without a stall. Oh yea and it has stock 3.42 gears. Thanks

I'd stay in the 22x/22x without a verter. It'll sound good but it won't drive that well. Verter is a must for anyone with an A4, Verter and a Cam at the same time would be a good idea, they seem to work like ying and yang, small verter with a huge cam, car will ET poor, huge verter with a small cam and it's over kill... but if you can get them both in the sweet spot you'll have a setup thats killer...

how big you can go??? you can go as big as you want but just know that your idle will be higher so your going to have to cram on the brakes at red lights and also that your powerband will shift up so youll have to really hit it to get into the meat of the power band.

i went through this same thing about wanting a cam before I put the converter in. To keep it drivable in town you can't put a very big cam in without a converter. i wanted a cam badly before i upgraded my converter. Just save up and do a converter so that you won't be limited on your cam selection because you have a stock converter. if you put a cam in now you will regret not having a big converter. You will want to go big after you put a smaller cam in. it is not that much trouble putting in a cam with the heads on.
