Default (Two Newb Qs) Rebuild engine on the side: LQ4/9 or LS1?

I'd like to pick up a super-cheap used shortblock to freshen on the side instead of pulling my LS1 with 106,xxx. That way, I can continue to drive my only car daily, and also gain a little experience in the process.

Now, just to show how much a newb I am, if I were to rebuild a high-miles shortblock that's been really been beat on, I would want to replace the:

1. Main Bearings
2. Connecting Rod Bearings
3. Cam Bearings
4: Piston Rings

QUESTION #1: Is that all that needs to be replaced in a rebuild? Either way, I'd appreciate a link to a good rebuild kits and some tips on what to look for. Remember, I'm trying to do this a cheap as possible.

QUESTION #2: Would I be better off going with an LQ4, LQ9, or LS1 to rebuild? The LQ's are heavier, aren't the original engine type, but have a larger bore. I'll be spraying the engine, but only a 150 shot so the added strength of the LQ -- if there truly is any -- is completely unimportant to me.

Thanks!

Well, I was really just talking about the shortblock, but thanks for the tips on the heads. Springs and valve stem seals. Got it.

oil pump and timing chain is part of the lower end {shortblock} of a engine

For what you want you should freshen up what you currently have . The money saved could get you a set of forged lightweight pistons and put in some katech rod bolts.

Iv heard this before and I understand there not supposed to be used but what does torque to yield mean? Are the torqued to the point right before they break so the threads will be streatched if they are re-used?

No, I didn't know about the bolts. Thanks Pete and Randy.

Thanks for all the replies.

Sounds like a fun winter project.
