So I'm changing my oil today, and this little gem shows up on my drain plug:



But get this, it's the SECOND TIME this has happened in as many oil changes since I got my cam installed. The cam is an F11 on a 112 LSA, 228/230, .576/.595. I am using the Futral pushrods and Manley Dual springs, part number 221426-1.

Look at this pic, you can see that the size of the piece that broke off is almost exactly the same as when it happened before. The new one is on the left.



Here is the old broken spring, third one back on the driver's side, and I'll have to ask my installer if it was intake or exhaust.



Other items of note: I have made 2 passes at the strip per oil change, shifting at 6600 each time. I also have a Direct-Flo lid, paper filter, Hooker Longtubes with Off Road Y, Flowmaster, and 4.10s.

I think I am just going to have them all replaced with another brand. Anyone have any suggestions?

There seems to be a recurring theme with the Manleys from the posts I have seen. I would change them all before you end up with bigger problems. PRC's, Patriots or Crane 833's if sticking with the duals.

Damn sorry Brandon,I returned your PM,contact Manley and see if they have upgraded their springs/etc? If I recall that spring I replaced was on the intake side?? Be curious to see where that one came from, I am a firm belivere in the 918's......

Did you install the seats that go with those springs?

You should have pulled everyhting off from the old set, seats, seals springs retainers etc.

Then when you go back together it has to have the Manley spring base, a new seal, the springs then the retainers keepers etc.

If you arent running the spring bases for Manleys this may be your problem. I had the same thing happen on another customers car that brought me some used springs but they previous owner didnt take the bases off to give to him. I wasnt aware until after the springs were broken that you had to run the base. I think the car was a 01 or 02 so i tried running the springs with the seal/base combo as one piece, the stock stlye ones, and it didnt have enough room in between the top of the spring seat and the springs. Basically, the inner springs were in a bind on a cam that is alot larger then yours. We broke all 8 intake springs. So since yours isnt so large in the lifts you maybe squeeking by for now but Id check this first and foremost before you look for a different spring setup.

I know the cam doesnt have huge lift, but still did you check to see if the inner spring was not binding? When I did my motor the outside spring didnt bind but the inner one did so we had to adjust. I think we ended up milling the seat. Good luck

I broke a Manley single coil not too long ago. I think the 918 type spring is the one to go with also.

I think the car I bought a few months back came with Manley springs. The H/C package was installed at Rapid Motorsports back in PA. Good shop from what I've seen/heard. Their site only shows Manley springs...so, I'm pretty sure that's what they used. Anyway, I found a nice little chunk of inner spring in my oil a little over a month ago. Damn thing took the valve seal with it. I went with the Patriot Gold kit and have 1,000 miles on the new ones. So far, so good. I just hope the new seal on that valve doesn't come loose easily now...

If you going to swap brands, go with a set of our Patriot Gold .650" springs. The spring kit comes with ti retainers, machined Super 7 locks, viton seals, and machined spring bases for $255.00. Our Patriot Golds are a great spring that gives incredible performance.

That manley spring is a very nice spring when used with their spring seat and titanium retainer. V-6 bird is on to something,you probably have the wrong spring seat and it is binding the inner spring. I have been using that spring combination in all the world challenge and rolex Grand Am GT engines that I build and have never had a failure.
