have a '96 lt1 did a 383 stroker going with a electric waterpump. do i still need to run the "lt1" timing chain or can i run just a sbc chain?

no you can use a sbc chain set up.

Can you use SBC timing GEARS in a LT1? I have a set in a 79 block and I'd love to use those. They sound so sweet lol

No you can not use SBC "gear" timing sets.. It would make the Knocks sensors go OFF THE WALL! lol

I doubt it, on the double rollers the LT1s need the roller cam timing sets. If they make timing gear set for 86 up blocks you might could, IDK.

You can use the Cloyes 3145 Timing set on the LT1. Alot of 93 owners do this when they switch to the vented opti and an electric waterpump. IF your interested. I have one sitting here from a past project, still brand new in box. PM me if interested.

Just a warning: Since you have a 1996 LT1, the Cloyes 3145 double-roller will most likely cause issues with the crank sensor. Traditionally, I believe it requires disabling of the crank sensor, as there isn't adequate clearance for the reluctor wheel, etc. Since I don't own a 1996, I'm afraid I can't elaborate.

Another warning for readers of this thread: The 3145 won't work for 1992-1994 LT1's without a 1995+ optispark conversion.

I've only heard of one or two people converting to a gear-drive. As mentioned, it will cause problems with the knock sensor, resulting in false knock and pulled ignition timing. Then again, you can always disable the knock sensor -- just have to be careful to listen for detonation and/or back off the ignition timing manually (ie, reprogram the PCM) to be safe.

Yea, I sadly never got my motor with the gears running right, it was in a TBI Suburban. It was either bad sensors on the motor (I swamped the truck in the mud over the hood heh. 6" lifted, so that's alot of water, doh.) or it was the false knocks. There was no predet that I could hear when I drove it, it just was rrrreal doggy :\ That was one thing my friend was worried about from the start though, was it messing with the knock sensor. He though wrapping it in foam/cloth might help :\

so what you are saying is yes i can use the sbc timing chain and may have to test fit the cover and possibly grind down?

There was something different about the cam gear bolt circle. Check it before you buy.

Where on the timing cover would you have grind if you needed to?
