Default 91 honda civic ses

This isn't for me. My girlfriend drives a 91 civic and has been getting a check engine light. SHe took it to autozone and they said they couldn;t check the code because it was too old. How should she get this checked then?

yea, i haven't actually driven the car so I can;t tell you how it acts. And I can;t get the codes so no help there. My girlfriend says "In 1st 2nd and 3rd gear it acts like it isn't getting enough fuel and jolts. and it acts like it doesn't have any more."

Honda... power... lol

check out some of the honda forums. On my old 89 CRX, there is a LED light in the passenger side flor board (behind some carpet) that will blink a certain number of times, and that number corresponds to the code. It should be the same setup on her car. But, just check out some import forums, and find out where that is, and what the numbers mean, and you can figure it out.

Almost sounds like a fuel filter may be clogged or soemthing....If it's doing it 1st - 3rd, It may just be it is not getting enough fuel and that is why it's acting like that.

But none the less take it to honda dealer and have them look at it.

Maybe the timing belt is old and stretched to hell, and the timing is way off

thanks. she just bpught the car from a guy who replaced the plugs b4 he sold it.

She told me the problem I mentioned only acts up when the SES light is on, and only sometimes then. The light comes on and off, and the problem only occurs sometimes when the light is on.

I have a 91 honda accord for my daily driver.
My light would also come on sometimes and the car ran like ****.
My problem was the speed sensor.
Good Luck.

yes, if the lights coming on and the car only runs bad when it does that will rule out a timing belt and fuel filter....

Wow she wasn't kidding about the car jolting. When the light is on, every time you let the clutch out to start from a stop or switch gears the car doesn't move fluidly, but jumps forth like 3-4 for times over the coarse of a second or two.

I checked the light under the floorboard and it blinks consecutivly 16 times. I don't really know how to read that, but I think that webpage says it's an electrical problem. I don't know if this page can tell me anymore information...

You have to get an OBD1 Scanner. I've seen them before it looks like a little chip that you plug in although I've never used one personally so I don't know if they function the same as my OBD2 scanner which tells you the code and gives a little information about it. Hope that helps and I don't remember exactly where I saw it but I believe Autozone had it or Discount Auto Parts.

Thanks, she went to autozone, and they said they couldn;t scan it because of its age. I read the flashing LED light, and it gives a very vague notions of the problem. I'll need to look into finding one of these scanners.

91 civic is a pre obd system...to check the codes you pull up the carpet on the passenger side...you will see the ECU and there will be a blinking light....long blinks count as numerals of ten and short blink numerals of 1...for example 2 long blinks and 3 short blinks will be a code 23...
if the car is throwing a code 16 that is a fuel injector code....
what model civic is it...
the dual point FI and the multi point FI will have to be diagnosed differently...check out this link....scroll down till you find 16 and go on from there... http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=468260....good luck

I thanks for the link, but it says image not found. I won't be back in AZ for a while, so I'll try to have her check for long and short blinks. How would she tell is it's dual point FI, or multi point FI?

honda-tech.com will have all the codes, make sure you used a jumper when you checked the blinking light. you can use a wire or paper clip there is a plug to you need to "shorT" out
