Is it worth 200 to pay a mech to change plug wires?

Default Is it worth 200 to pay a mech to change plug wires?

My plug wires a really bad, a mechanic said it would be between 175-200 in labor to change them. Is this a good deal or is there any possible way i can change them myself? (i dont have a lift just a jack)

And also he said my power trane module is going bad? what the hell is that?

That is a little high, doesn't surpise me though. A checked on a tune up when I first purchased mine. Dobbs wanted about $850 (cap rotor, plugs and wires). The next thing is if your going to go through the trouble you might as well replace the distrubutor if it has'nt been done already because your already there. If that seal in there goes your right back to square one. And you might as well replace the water pump so it doesnt go out later and ruin your new cap and rotor. I bought all the parts and had a local shop do the work. In the end I was still out of $1000 bucks, but he also did my header install too.

Very poor design by GM IMO.

Thats not a bad price but you can do them your self...you can make due with a jack,..jack stands would help too

might as well change plugs while your at it

I was unable to do them for myself so I asked a guy at Autozone if he knew anyone open Saturday. I went to the place he told me and it was run down, no lift, scary place. But I felt bad because the guy from Autozone told him on the phone that I really needed his help. Turned out to be awesome.

They changed passenger O2, fuel filter, PLUGS and WIRES.

All for $85.

Thats right, $85. Fixed my cars problems and its running good, for now.

wow thats dirt cheap. i changed my opti, cap, and rotor about 500 miles ago. so they are new. water pmp is original but all new gaskets sealed up good. How long do you think it would take a novice person changing them at home?

I would never change another 02 myself again. COst me 250$ 50 for the sensor 200 to fix the broken exhaust flange studds i broke. And probly 6 hours of cussing and trying to find a way to get to it.

A shop estimated me $165 to CLEAN my egr valve. I bought a new one for 60 and did it myself in probly 3 minutes.

I installed my wires in 3hr and 45 minutes. Passenger side is a PITA. B-cars route between AC compressor and bracket not around it like your guy's

I do all my work to my car myself and I would not pay 200$ to have plugs installed. Take your time do one at a time and it will be ok, you can do them your self. You can jack the car up and put it on jack stands and you can reach the plugs from undrneath also. It will be a great learning experiance

i would do as many as you can by yourself, but have someone there who knows how to get the rest once you are no longer able to finish it (it will save you money and gives a good excuse for something to do on a weekend!)

Do the driverside first and get a sense of accomplishment

The passenger side is a PITA.

I use a coat hanger and a piece of string to feed the wires through the space between the block and accesories.

Use some zip ties to keep them out of harms way.

Do it yourself and save your $200.00 for another Mod.

i think he just has to change the wires.

its not quite as bad if you have the stock exhaust manifolds, i'd say it would be worth about 60-70 bucks max for labor. what i would do. is save the money in labor, get some good $100 over the valve cover wires, (like i did) and do them yourself. much easier installation, and much better product. i run 9.5mm with a braided heat resistant sheild down the entire length of the wires and big mac daddy boots. it should be a while before i have to do them again. and they look pretty nice too.

I'll give it a shot this saturday, but dont be suprised if i get back on enraged because i have never had a ez operation on this car, exept changing the oil and air filter was ez.

If you've got a warm, well-lit place to do it I'd say go for it. I'm in St. Louis and it's gettin' cold over here I know, cold fingers will make it 20x harder! The passenger side really is a PITA, you'll have to remove the alternator and the starter, neither one is difficult, but a pain nonetheless. I would definately look into a relocation kit that puts the wires in looms over the valve covers, don't even think about getting them back into the stock loom thingeys... good luck man!
