Default heater core

so i have noticed as it starting to get colder here in oklahoma...that my heater really isnt performing to my standards!! lol

it does move air. but with the car warming up to 180* the air never really gets any warmer!! i was told i may want to check my t-stat first to see if it is stuck open.... and i think this could be part of, or "the" problem because my car has NOT seen 185*+ in a LONG time.

anyone have any suggestions? never done a heater core before. heard they are lots of fun though!!! lol i am of course gonna check the stat first...much easier and cheaper!!!

thanks guys!!

what degree thermostat you got in there? I always ran a 160 stat and then swapped to a 180 in winter when I was daily driving my car.

Heater Core is pretty easy to change..
Usually when they go, they spill Coolant everywhere. Could be the Blower Motor isn't really working right, most likely the vents are not opening the way they should.

1) Check thermostat (just replace it, they're cheap)

2) Do jet flush on core to see if that works. If no, step 3.

3) Replace heater core. Make sure you also remove the A/C evaporator and clean the fins (use vacuum, brush). Reinstall everything. Enjoy heat.

That would be the Resivoir, the Condensor is infront of the Radiator, unless you meant that also.

Yea mine sucks **** too. I assume I have a 160stat in mine, it only gets up to the first line on the gauge and I have ZERO heat. I wouldn't even call it lukewarm

Also there are vacuum lines that move the actuators and a cable to move the door in between the AC evaporator and the Heater Core. if the cable or the actuators go you can have problems with your HVAC system

Does anybody have directions (diagrams) on how to change a heater core in our cars? Also does anybody have more info on that TSB mentioned by UnitZ28?

Nevermind...

Autozone.com > repair info > repair guides > under chassis electrical

Couple of tips- Remove the hoses while the core is still bolted down then take a shop vac and suck out as much coolant as you can, this avoids a big mess inside. cut a couple pieces of cardboard and place them on both sides of the new core while your jimmying it back in to place, to aviod damaging the fins. Make sure you reuse the foam gaskets or replace them with something similar, basically seal around the sides of the core so air goes through it not around. It is tight in there and will require some wiggling but it's not as bad as many other cars.

I have a 160 degree stat and never had issues with the heat. It blows plenty warm whenever needed. I dont know if you guys were saying that the low temp stat would be causing it or not.... if so, well, not in my car .

I'm sorry to interupt on your converstions but the unit that is in front of the heater core that you should remove is the evaporater core. It's what the cold compressed freon flows through in order to cool the A/C, I've seen them plugged up with hair to leaves from the trees to bugs.

I took that out, no problems there. I got 2-55 AC now..
The Heater Core is pretty easy, remove the little plastic Panel, the Glove Box, and start taking stuff apart. Just remember how to put it together.

That's it! Evaporator Core. I can never remember all these technical names. Anyway, you will have much colder A/C and more powerful heat if you clean it. You won't believe how clogged it will be.

I spent thanksgiving day fixing my heater, it never worked from the day I bought it (about 18 months). I pulled the hoses off the core and blew them out. The heater works great now.
