I took the SS out tonight, and I let it breath out for a little bit just to get the feel of things. It was running pretty good, albiet for the little flicker and the P1637 SES code on. I pulled into a parking lot, let the car sit for a little bit, and then I fired it up to go how.

Pulling out, check guages light comes on and I see that the oil pressure is right at zero. Totally dead.

So I shut the engine off right then and there, and then I pop the hood. The oil is still in the engine, so I get back into the car and I fire it back up. Oil guage springs back to life and everything is normal.

I get home watching it like a hawk and the pressure is fine, still rises with the RPM's and everything.

When I get home, I let it sit for a little bit and I watch the oil pressure. I slight flickering of it and it sits between 30 and 40 PSI. I blipped the throttle a few times just to make sure all was still good, and then I shut it down for the night.

So why the low oil pressure? Do you think my guage just momentaraly spazzed out or do you think it could be a sign of other problems? I have never seen anything happen like that before.

Oil pressure sending unit going bad? What would be the cause of that?

FWIW, I just went outside and tried to start it just to see what happened. 0 PSI on startup and immidietly shut it down.

This is bad.

Either your Oil pump went out or you oil pressure sending unit went out.

My car did that, bucked once, and the pressure was at zero. I later discovered the pressure was at 0 b/c the engine had DIED, not b/c of any failure. Replaced my IAC and she never has died again. If the pressure had gone to 0 when running you would have spun a bearing I am almost positive

the fact that he said it "flickered" between 30 and 40 is what makes me really think that its the sending unit.

I doubt you have an IAC issue, as stated, prolly sending unit.

B/c it is an electrical piece, and they dont last forever! Common problem.. I agree with the other poster, the flicker, then die, then work, then not work again at home, sounds to me like it is acting up. Change it. Should be on the top of the block behind your intake(probably have to remove the intake) and go from there.

How long did it run and did you hear ANY odd tapping? If you heard no odd tapping and it ran for over 5 seconds its the sending unit im pretty sure

No odd tapping. Just tried to fire it up, oil pressure is at zero, and immidietly shut down.

I'm going to go ahead and try to fire it up again this morning. We'll see what happens.

Okay, I just tried to fire it up again. Twice.

Oil pressure is sitting at zero.

Each time I shut down the engine within a few seconds.

Great, so now what? It just wouldn't make sense for the car to get me home all right, and then suddenly have zero oil pressure.

I'd like to think that it's just an electrical issue, but I don't want to actually bank on that too much and risk tossing the motor.

If your pump was dead, it woulda spun a bearing on crank up on the 2nd time b/c all the oil is in the pan after last night. Bum a ride, get a sending unit, replace it, then try it.

Well, I got a daily, so it's going to sit.

Details on sending unit? Specifics? Location? How to change? Where can I buy it? Etc etc?

Also, any obvious way to tell if a bearing would've spun? ANy appreciable RPM change on startup? Tapping or rattling noises?

The engine for the most part acted and sounded normal.

mine did this, sending unit died. I would suggest that you change the sending unit and have the oil pump looked at. There were issues with the pumps as mine on my 01 died and caused critical engine failure.

before you start taking it a part.

1.take the valve covers off, enough to look inside.start engine and look if you got any oil coming out.

2.check to see if you pick up any new codes

3.if you got oil coming out then replace the oil pressure switch
